440A!? They even made the ZK line look bad! I Love the ZK line, and I Love KA-BAR's but the USMC style ZK is just stupid.....

Ok, nevermind, I found it.

I can't figure out how to post the photo, but just click the link. It's a toy for morons that actually buy knives based on copy like that written above. Dying to have a green handled traditional KABAR USMC but don't like the steel and etc? Buy some spraypaint (this comment not directed at you, wrknives, just at anyone who gets all excited about embarrassing ad copy).

and really I shouldn't be so quick to judge... the new JAB piggyback xl is going to be the same steel and Steve insists that the heat treat will mean the 440A makes it a great tool.

I have used 440A for years and have found it to be a useful steel. It is easy to get really sharp, very stainless and will hold an edge quite well.

I don't hate the color but I hate serrations and the CUTCO stamp where it should say Ka-Bar is a turnoff for me, even though I know CUTCO is Ka-Bar's parent company.

All I really want is that guard and pommel with a straight edge. If I can get a foliage or tan handle, even better.

Same here. However, if I can get a neon-lime-green-handled pistol bayonet for my handheld zombie splatter cannon, I'll buy a dozen right now.

And where do we get these knives? I have nightmarish visions of Vector sales zombies knocking on my door with neon-lime-green knives, which they'll happily sell me after they eat my brains.

Here's mine. Says Kabar on the blade, and I'll take some good heat treated 440A anyday. Some folks.might not agree, but Kabar is trying to offer something for every hobby out there. Since Cutco bought the rights to the Next Generation, made some changes, mostly eliminating the fuller, and going to a hollow grind, its now called the Explorer.

I'm likin' it, but others may not. Not every knife is for everyone. Good post, btw.

Hey moose do you think the removal of the fuller will compromise the strength of the blade? It was my understanding that the purpose of the fuller was to add surface area making a stronger blade. Did they do away with it to eliminate a step in production?

Fullers reduce weight.

They do make the same knife with a black handle. I just hate serrations too much to buy one.

The serrations extend out from the edge. Unlike "normal" serrations that are cut in from the edge, these can be sharpened away, leaving a plain edge. It would just take some time.

Really? I might start trying to hunt down a salesman then.

Great color on the handle! I seriously doubt you'd misplace that blade on the hunting trail. About the knife...these are priced above my comfort level, but they are fine blades and benefit from a good tempering. Mine has been used, passed around and used again. It is the dark finish variety and reminds me of my older carbon steel Kabar that has been with me through thick and thin. I have also taken it on more than a few fishing trips.

I loaned this blade out last year to a Boy Scout troop. They cut with it, used it as a hammer, chopped wood. From what I was told, each and every kid took his turn. The splitting of small logs was no issue and at the end of the day, the cook sliced up the grub for the boys. When I got the knife back, it was returned very reluctantly by the troop leader. He said he planned on visiting the Cutco web page from the cozy comfort of his favorite chair after I declined his offer of me parting company with this neat tool.

i think its kinda cool looking and i trust that kabar put a good heat treat on the 440a!

Seeing that CUTCO makes all of KA-BARS USA knives I would think the heat-treat is ok.

As much as I dislike the zombie craze, I kinda like these. It would be seriously hard to lose one.

Seeing that CUTCO makes all of KA-BARS USA knives I would think the retreat is ok.

In the USA, we never retreat.:D
