Got this Boker 492 22. Any advise on what the handle material is?

Any other info on a 492 22?

Thanks, Bob

Looks like stag. (Bone would have been cut and jigged to fit closer to the liners by and large.)
A quick google search on the model indicates that it was offered in "deer stag".

Burnt stag most likely - looks to be at least partially "second cut" too. It's still stag, but they partially char it with heat to give it some character and color. I don't think I've ever seen burnt bone with stag jigging -- it's too easy to dye bone to be whatever colors you want.

Elliot, thanks for the reply. I have been googleing the heck on the internet to try to sort this out. After reading your reply I did this search "boker barlow deer stag" Didn't find anything new. Found a dealer who had deer stag barlows very similar to mine. One was listed on the bay as 492 22, one on their website as 492HH. I believe the pictures in both places were the same.

thanks again, Bob

You're welcome, Bob, but I'd have been much less certain of my answer had I not been backed up by Dwight who has forgotten more than I know about these knives.

Dwight, thanks for the reply. What's really confusing is that I ordered this knife:

"Boker Knife Barlow 492HH Stag"

What I got is (in my view) a way different handle and different model number: 492 22.

thanks, Bob

I can see why you'd be confused -- the flatter scales there are just the second cut stag (or more likely, really boring smooth (unfigured) first cut stag) with just a light scorch. On yours, they decided to try to make it look a bit more like decent first cut stag and give it some stag jigging and a heavier char. Personally, I think I prefer the look of the flatter scales. This is usually the difficulty with stag on mass produced knives -- the figuring, quality and looks will vary wildly from one example to the next (and even from one side to the other).

Hello to all! I am new to the forum, so thanks so much for having me! Speaking of Boker 492 22s, can anyone who owns or has experience with these knives like those pictured above chime in? I am thinking of purchasing one of the newer stag ones but am curious about walk and talk/spring strength, edge holding ability, fit and finish, blade wobble, blades being centered etc. I am looking for an EDC and camp knife of good quality and am hoping this might be it. I knew I could come here for some honest opinions! Are these made in Germany and assembled in China or all made in Germany? The last knife I purchased was a GEC UN-X-LD stag barlow. Before that I picked up a used 1978 Case 6235 1/2. Both these knives have strong backsprings (my preference). So knowing all this, should I pick up one of the Bokers? Thanks!!

I had bought one of those boker stag barlows.

it was not a good experience. it had severe side to side blade wobble. SO i contacted the manufacturer and they said to send it in.
when i sent it in, they said they could see my problem and that it needed to be returned. but they would have to send it to germany and it would take at least 6+ months to get it back. So i took credit and got something else (for the money i picked up one of the boker prybars, since the credit boker gave me was LESS than what i payed for it on amazon). The next day, the very next day the new 2011 catalogue arrived with the new cheaper traditionals, i was so grumpy if i had just waited a day i could have gotten another knife at least.

Lets just say (and i can only speak for myself) I wont be purchasing any more boker pocket knives
of course, others may have had better experiences than i have

Tom, rather than hijack this thread any further, please start a new thread asking for experiences with recent Boker traditional pocket knives.

I'm going to close this thread. It's done.
