Is anyone familiar with the actual (as opposed to United junk) Gil Hibben knives? I have what looks to be one of his earlier bowies, a big bone-handled monster with a 11.5" blade. Any idea of age?

Gil Hibben is a real nice guy. I'm sure if you contact him directly, he'd be happy to share all the information you need.

I believe the stamp reads Manti UT. If that is the case the knife was made between 1965-1970. It is a very nice looking Bowie.

You were most correct; it was made in 1968. Mr. Hibben wrote me back and said:

Dear Alex,

It's great to see one of my old knives, thank you!! One of these knives was on the cover of Guns&Ammo magazxine in 1968. I called the knife a Buffal Bill Cody Bowie, like the one Buffalo Bill carried. The original design came out of England and had an ivory handle. The knife you have has an India stag handle with the bark taken off. You are correct about the nickle silver spacers. The blade was hand-forged from 440C round stock probably in 1968. Hope this information helps.
Sincerely,
Gil Hibben
