hello, i've been the owner of a rather old sword for a few years now, and have long been curious about it. it started off just wondering what a symbol near the hilt meant, then i realized i didnt know the language it was in, or even where the sword was made. i tried googling to see if anyone else had this same sort of sword, just incase it was a mass produced replica. so far i've gone through about 10 of the top online websites, scrolled through about 70 pages worth of swords, and have yet to see a picture even close to my own weapon. i discovered this forum a month or two ago and decided to ask if anyone here knows anything about this sword.

thats a general overview of the shape of the blade.

the symbol i was originally curious as to what it stood for is this:

i honestly have no idea how to search for this and figure out what language this is, or what it means. i suspect korean however.
there is also this shape that is on the sheath, i dunno if it is the same language or not. actually i dont know if its a real language at all, but this might help whoever is helping me discover more about this blade.

i have attempted a fair bit of research on my own. on this forum i found a link to a page that helps people figure out if their sword is worth much on their own (http://japaneseswordindex.com/realold.htm this page)
unfortunately that page only told me "its possibly really valuable, but MIGHT be a common factory made blade. it has a very nice looking hilt (partly why i bought it) that can not be removed to check and see if there is rust inside, to determine the age.

i have a few other pictures i can post if people need more information. however there's really not too much i can tell you about this blade, that's partly why i'm here. i bought it at a flee market in upstate south Carolina, from a dealer who didnt really know that much about it, but sold it to me for about 80$. since then it's been well kept on a shelf of mine.

if anyone can tell me anything about this sword, please let me know! if it's a replica, where can i get another one? (this weapon has long been the envy of my brother who really wants one, but no way am i selling mine XD) on the otherhand, if its an ancient sword that's several decades old, how valuable would it be?

thanks for your time!

From the fittings, I`d guess it`s a cheap tourist item. Several decades old would be practically brand new; there are indeed ancient swords in museums, some dating back several centuries, which could be called ancient.

Unfortunately you have a modern Chinese fantasy sword that's trying to be a Japanese tachi.
The website you mention is mine.

thank you for the information everyone. a little bit disappointing but just shows not to get your hopes up no matter how cool your flee market sword is :D

@BePrepared, you mentioned that they sold them at your local mall, do you happen to know the name of the store and if they have a website? my brother has been a huge dragon and sword fan for about 20 years, and owning a sword like this would make his day.
