What is this kind of sheath called?

...and how do you wear it? I believe it originally came with an Alan Woods woodcraft knife. Just curious.

Your belt end goes over the sheath and through the loop. Its a nice firm carry method. Albeit rather unusual looking to the uninitiated. :)

Like this perhaps if you remove the cord.

I call this sheath a Slotted sheath and it is the default sheath with most of my knives. Other sheaths are options. Cool thing is it can be worn 360 degrees on the belt. For a larger knife I like to carry it behind the right hip. Very comfortable and secure. Got to building this under the belt style at the request of quite a few northern cowboys that were riding some pretty snorty ponies. Once the rodeo was over and they had ol "Dubbin" lined out they wanted to still have their knife with them. Conversely, if Dubbin got er done they didn't want to land on their knife. Gives ya a whole new perspective on securement.

I've heard them called Mountain man sheaths, very handy carry method and the tighter the belt, the firmer it will retain the knife as well.

Thanks for the quick answers. Very helpful. I have some knives ready for sheaths - I might try this. It would eliminate the accidental lefties at least.

Thanks Gary. Thats a pretty large knife in the pic but with a smaller fixed blade which is more my norm, it simply disappears.
