hi everyone,
yesterday I ran into a friend who offered me a great deal on CS RTecon Tanto, like new
in great shape for $25.00. Well I couldn't pass it up.
after getting home with my new prize I compared it to my CS Bushranger ,which gets
a lot of use, and it occured to me that these
two knives were designed with different purposes in mind.
So what is the recon tanto good for?
I mean When would it be a better choise than
my bushranger?
Thanx for all your advice dan

Duh, covert ops. and recon missions

Just kidding. As far as far as I know tantos are supposed to be very strong for things lke armor peircing, I saw one on the forums awhile back made of M2 that could be stabbed through a quarter with no damage to the point. So it may be better for hard use than your other knife. Depending on the grinds (chisel ground?) it probably won't slice quite as well.

Fix it right the first time, use Baling Wire !

I have both knives. The Bush Ranger is the better slicer, and chops surprisingly well for it's thinness and weight. The Tanto is a great all-around knife for prying and wood-splitting, plus it whittles just fine for outdoors use.

I would honestly feel better with the Recon Tanto for all-around abuse and use, but it'sa close call. The Bush Ranger is a great knife, too, but loses slightly in the prying and chopping area...

The Recon Tanto is one that falls into the sharpened "prybar" category. It maintains a thicker spine than the Bush Ranger and can therefore be used for light (or heavy) prying in an emergency situation. It is basically a military/ field use knife. At least CS had the right idea of putting a decent belly on this blade. Not a bad knife for the money/ $25 but nothing spectacular IME.

I bought a recon tanto second a number of years back. I still don't know what I was thinking. It is a sturdy piece and sharpens up real nice. Just haven't found a great use for it. My son, however, discovered that it was great for scraping hides while he was tanning some deerskins last month. so there you have it....it is good for something other than sentry removal.
I had thought of perforating my new burn barrel(55 gallon drum) with it, but once again my son came up with the correct tools. He selected his 1911 and I chose my S$W Model 29. Smart kid.

Hell, for $25, strap that sob to your thigh, go camping/hiking and never worry about chipping, bending, scratching, or losing your knife again!

I have a bunch of CS knives, including a Recon Tanto (paid full price for!!!) a carbon hunter, and formerly a TrailMaster, which was lost in action. I carry with my on EVERY hiking/camping trip my CS Recon Tanto factory Second. Awesome piece for the $$$, and a hell of a tough tool!

hey guys
thanx for the quick responce.
its nice to hear from people who
own this knife. It sounds like I got
real nice knife for what I paid.
I will take on trips into the wildernees
and such.

ptn: the model 29 is a awsome gun I have one
with the 6.5 inch barrel. loads of fun!!
no place to shoot in santa barbara though,

I have had a CS Recon tanto for a few years. I have it strapped to my tactical vest that I wear on marijuana eradications. It is a tough knife and keeps a good edge. I also used to wear it snow shoeing alot and never had a problem with rust. For $25.00 you got a heck of a deal.

I have a CS Bushmaster on the way and I am glad it has gotten good reviews from everyone.

My brother in law has used a CS tanto for years when canoe tripping. It has enough belly for food prep and is thick and tough enough for any utility work done around a campsite. Just use and abuse..especially when you paid only 25 bucks for it.

My friend used the recon tanto for years in his military service and for slaughtering sheep in the Bedouin tribe where he is regarded as part of the family.

I know it held well - because I was the one sharpening it for him all those years.

It proved to be a very good knife for the money.

He lost it in action year ago so I gave him my buck hunter as a present.

Isn’t that what friends are for??

Remember the snipe hunt thread? I posted that I can't understand why CS doesn't advertise the Recon Tanto for dressing and skinning snipe, since it's the purpose that knife is best suited for....

For $25, though, you could reprofile that blade into a more usable shape ... make a handle for it that's not kraton ... thin out the grind until it can cut things....

Or you could just use it as a prybar.
