What is this odd military gear doohickey thingamajig?

Has us all stumped on another forum, it came as a freebie when a guy ordered a ruck on Ebay, seller just said it was a lanyard.
My guess was a small split ring (attached to a small piece of gear like a whistle) can get put on the springy plastic tab and can be popped off quickly.
Tabs are 2 inches long and the whole thing is .22 feet. Can't be a personal lanyard if that long.

I bet it would hold up the grommets on a tarp, they are spaced about 10.5 inches apart though, most tarps I see are spaced a lot farther.
 
It's the line for stringing together camo nets.

You have to be sure and put all the pins in from the same direction. Then when you tear down a simple pull seperates the nets.
 
Makes perfect sense now eisman! I knew that it was some sort of quick release, rather clever yet simple idea.
