"Greetings,
Due to multiple lawsuits against
mailorder companies that sell knives,
we are unable to ship any product to
Ventura, Yolo, Napa or Marin counties in California.
See this link for more information:
http://bg.catalogagemag.com/ar/marketing_sale_knives_kill/
We will cancel this order.
We apologize for the inconvenience."

On Yahoo Answers someone posted a question 2 years ago quoting this same message word-for-word. I live in Marin County and have ordered 5 knives in the last year without incident. I tried ordering a Boker ceramic knife and got this reply.

Anyone have any idea what's going on here? The place I tried ordering from (I probably can't say who) was a little shady, by which I mean their website was poorly designed. Plus the link they included is dead. WTF?

Exactly, there are MANY other stores online.

I'm in NY, and our situation is worse than yours when Knife Center, and several other retailers that I used to shop regularly stopped shipping to ALL of NY state...

But I just spent over $800.00 on knives and gear yesterday on an online retailer that will ship knives to NY...(to which I will keep anonymous and pour all of my monthly spending habit of $500-1000 on).:thumbup:

Try Cold Steel. Lynn Thompson will ship anywhere in the U.S. (and internationally) from his California headquarters, no problem at all. Sword canes and butterfly knives are shipped out of his Arizona facility, since they are illegal in California. CS is a good company that stands by its merchandise. They will definitely ship to New York.

Butterfly knives aren't illegal in California. Some Googling will turn up a 25 year old Attorney General's proclamation that they are switchblades, which if it were being applied on the street (no idea if it is, or has been overruled by a court) would restrict carrying them outside your home.

If they were legal to sell in California, Lynn Thompson would be selling/shipping them from Cold Steel's headquarters on Seaborg Avenue in Ventura, CA. He is shipping them from his Arizona office, along with sword canes.

Personally I find that when I want to know what the law is, it's better to look it up and read it for myself rather than making guesses based on secondhand reports of one company's internal organization.

I don't want that crap, why do I care if someone will ship crap to NY if I want something decent from another who won't?

Your answer is not only pointless, but sounds like a marketing shill for CS. :barf:

I am disappointed with the majority of sellers altering policy to avoid NY.

I'm afraid that you have misjudged me. My comments were not a "marketing shill for CS"; they were the result of my many positive experiences dealing with that company and its products over the course of about 20 years or so. In an age where many dealers are cowering in fear because of D.A.s like Vance, it is good to know that there are people like Lynn Thompson who are not afraid to do the right thing by the customer. If you wish to purchase products from cowardly weenies, that is entirely your choice. I prefer to give my business to a man who has the courage to stand up for what is right.

Simplest solution, do business with someone else.
And so I did, and the knife is on its way. I should've raised the red flag when it looked like the website was designed by an 8 year-old. The only incentive to buy from them was the price.
