On KABAR's new K2 model- it comes in various blade formats with "3Cr13 stainless steel". considering the price, is that just a fancy way of saying 420j2 or 440A?

good price, regardless of steel quality, the liners and g10 would normally be $18. Seems a pretty literal name- 3 then 13% chromium so im going to call it three stainless

its a European steel classification, which is actually very sensible since you know immediately the main contributions.

The 3 in the beginning is the Carbon content meaning 0.3%, the 13 after the Cr is the Chromium content: 13%. There is not much else in there or it would be named (with P and S excluded).

As a comparison, the steel of Spyderco's Byrd knives is 8Cr13MoV which indicates 0.8%C and 13%Cr with Molybdenium and Vanadium added.

420J I believe has only 0.15%C so is a bit better than that, but it has less carbon than 440A

I think that is why CRTK calls this 420J2. It has twice the carbon content of 420J.

That's simple thanks
