What is this thing?

My dad called a Fireman's Hatchet when he gave it to me but I'm having a hard time finding info on it wondering if any of you may no more about it and also it just so damn cool I figured I'd share with you all ;)

USAF rescue hatchet. For chopping through aluminum aircraft skin and frame. The handle is insulated from electrical input. I think mid WWII through the 1950's. I don't recognize the logo/maker's mark.

If you're interested in the design - something simillar is still produced, just search for the "spax tool".
 
I looked it up and I'm more interested in the sheath than the tool itself as mine is in really good condition
 
If you include "Gemtor" in your search, you'll find more information. Still a part of aircraft crash kits, at least in some circles.
