What is this knife and what is it used for? It is not sharp on the edges. (I tried to insert the image, but I got a pop up asking for a url??? How can I insert the image of the knife?)

Shucking oysters.

It is maybe 4 inches long in total and the blade is beveled like a knife on both side but it is not sharp at all.

Some do, some do not. Where I spent lots of time in Texas and Louisiana the ones I used and saw the most did not.

It sure looks like one to me, and the shape of the handle would be pretty comfortable to use for such.

My experience is, most DO have guards.

I don't know what to tell you other than to shop online for oyster knives and see the variety for yourself. I've used a lot of oyster knives myself and I've come to prefer those without guards, much like yours.

It's also possible that you have a type of cheese knife.
