It's been in my garage for as long as I have been alive (my grandfather had it) and it's perplexed me for nearly as long. I have always assumed it is some kind of sharpener but I have no idea how to even use it...

I'm not sure if it would work as a yo-yo, but even if it doesn't work at all that would be better than using it as a sharpener. At least using it as a yo-yo wouldn't do any harm. I hate those things.

I have one. It leaves a heck of a lot better edge that the carbide pull through gadgets. The edge is more acute too. Just getting it out and trying it on a Chinese mystery stainless blade, I can get and edge that will slice paper pretty well. Not much on the push cut, but defiantly a usable edge. Doesn't do very well with the point of the knife.

The stone is fairly coarse: it leaves a visibly toothy edge at 40x magnification. The angle I got on the blade I sharpened seemed to have an angle between 30 and 40 degrees included. The angle would change a bit with the thickness of the knife though.
