bought it yesterday in a box at an auction. I am thinking tool and die stuff, etc. very heavy. very solid!

Looks one of many purpose build tools a machinist might turn to aid in a perticular job. Once the job is done, it gets relegated to the bottom of the tool box in case it's needed again on a similar job. Might have been used as a dead center or locating a bearing or just testing the size on a bore.
 
Looks like a locator pin to me... we used to turn our own. Basically, its a shot in dark. As was already said, It could be a one off thing.

Probably not what it was made to do, but it looks like it could be handy as an anvil for setting rivets/snaps/etc. against when leather working
