What is up with this PM2?

I have two brand new PM2s. Regular S45V. Both from a well known reputation knife dealer. Look at the tangs of these knives. On knife 1 one you see how smooth it is and polished. On knife 2...not so much and the bottom doesn't have a straight clean edge like the first does. Now here's the funny thing..I much prefer knife two. Better action, better lockup...but what's up with that tang? Could you guys with PM2s post yours?

I have Cruwear, s110v and maxamet versions all looking like the bottom picture.

Without different angles and controlled lighting it's going to be hard to say what's up with the top picture. Could be cosmetic surface finishing or maybe the blade face the lock rides has a geometric deformity... I am curious.

I would send it back as I over worry about future unforseen issues. It's probably g2g and Spyderco would take care of you later. They'll know if it's deformed enough to cause issue.

I'm confused...which knife is the top picture for you? Because for me it's the smooth one.

I see the images like you. All of them look like the bottom picture. A flat sloped plane with faintly visible lines. Some barely show the lines but all look flat to the eye.

The top picture looks concave with a low spot near the middle. It looks finely blasted and lacks surface features.

Are these your first and only PM2's?
Hopefully a few others chime in soon!

I won't be home for several hours so I can't post a picture. Maybe you like knife 2 because it's likely the correct blade tang.

Oh. I was worried about the bottom one not the top lol...These are the only two PM2s I have at the moment. I've bought and sold probably 20, just never looked at this part. I was more worried about the bottom of that face...how it's jagged...and even the little steel burr (red arrow)

Ok, I was wrong about mine looking like the second picture in that regard. Mine do NOT have that mini grand canyon thing, it's so jagged. I'm on my old galaxy phone and didn't see that until you zoomed up.

As stated, hopefully someone can take a quick picture of a normal one. Seems both yours look strange in some way... Zoomed in the entire second picture is ugly! It's too rough looking, but the top picture sure looks smooth and powdered or blasted.

Are these bought from a trustrd safe source? Just asking... just in case.

Yes, both from very reputable dealer

Look around 6:20. I think it shows what you want. Again I'm on an old crap phone and can't see clearly. Sitting here at my daughter's gymnastics practice leaves me with little to do but look at PM2 disassembly videos. 😄

Strange all the variation. Let us know what you find out. Email these pics to Spyderco and they'll sort it out fast!

Spyderco never gets back to you on email, it's terrible haha . This is from the video...kind of seems like that one isn't perfect straight across on the bottom either. I really don't understand what the purpose of that little cutout...(notch if you are looking from the side of the blade) is for..like when he demonstrates how a compression lock works in that video that notch has no use.

Here is the maxamet one, my other PM2's are similar if not less pronounced. Mine are all from one of two well-known vendors and I sure hope they are real.

This is a hard place to photograph. Here is my best effort. I'm ready to eat and take a shower so I gave up after five minutes. Came out good enough.

Yeah. Here is another picture of mine...that random piece of steel hanging down. I'm not sure it effects anything or not though.

I think the answer will need to come from someone who knows the manufacturing process.
This is my Canis which shows the opposite extreme. Hope it doesn’t confuse things. The Yojumbo on the right proved too hard to photograph.

The place you are worried about will become a big problem...after you beat the knife to the point the lock is travelling all the way across. At that point that burr will be chewing on the lock tab and probably causing lock stick until either it or the tab wears away. If you are using it for a knife, that should take about a hunded years. If you are using it for a fidget toy/mall ninja combat trainer, it will happen a lot sooner. Until then, it will have no effect. It is not a bearing surface for anything but lock engagement, and even that will happen only at the end of life.
