What is Valox?

I've just purchased the very inexpensive Camillus boot knife as a personal protetection knife (I don't care too much about exotic steels for a self-defense knife that - hopefully - will never have to be used).

It says the handles are made of Valox (a tradename obviously). What kind of synthetic is that? Is it plastic like ABS, or is it a glass reinforced composite like Zytel?

Thanks Dex,

That helps to a certain extent. However, it says Valox comes in many forms: unreinforced, glass reinforced, etc. I'm just wondering which type Camillus uses. Not that I expect too much from a budget, price point knife as long as it does a reasonable job for the money.

No prob. I am willing to bet my money that Camillus is using the reinforced type. That's how they can get strength without having the extra bulk and weight. I don't recall, but I think the Sierra series (lightweight lockbacks) have Valox handles as well.
