What is "villager fit and finish"?

I've seen the phrase "villager fit and finish" numerous times, but haven't found anything that describes what that actually is.

"Villager finish" looks like it's simply not polished to mirror-like shininess. Since I plan on using it to chop wood for its main use, that's just as well. (I'm not the type to put knives on display.)

I have no idea what "villager fit" would be, though. I'm concerned that it might mean a smaller handle. I have moderately big hands, so a smaller-than-otherwise handle would be the wrong direction for me to go.

I found a very useful page of abbreviations in the link library, but this wasn't in there. Would someone care to educate me on this subject?

One thing is they don't always come with sheaths if that matters to you.

Your exactly right Charles, they just aren't polished. More of a satin finish which some find more attractive anyhow.

The KLVUK has the black forge scale left on so the knife above the edge will appear black and it's tough tough stuff.
This is the knife you would see working over in Nepal. A real workhorse.

As Sosa said the KLVUK's quite often don't come with a sheath. There used to be a large supply of what was called Kami Medical Relief sheaths that were donated and Auntie sold cheap, like 20 bucks as I recall but sadly that supply has dried up.

Also, did you see the post Auntie did that said she did not receive your email, she also didn't receive the one you sent us both. She did get my forwarded version so there's a weak link in communication.
She included her phone number and would like a call.

Charles:

You were right in the first place. Village fit and finish basically means that the blade isn't polished, and maybe the handle, bolster and buttcap are also "satin finish." It is not the same as a "blem," which might have a handle crack or cosmetic problems.

Some people prefer the satin finish, and some don't care because once you start using a blade it quickly loses any polish. The villager versions are not any cheaper than the corresponding polished blades.

There is another grade of HI knife, sometimes called an "ugly villager," that is closer to what might be used by a Nepalese farmer. The best example of that type is the KLVUK (Keshar Lal Villager Utility Knife), named after the kami who makes most of them. These blades are not satin finish. They have the forging scales left on and less time spent on cosmetics, which is reflected in the lower price. KLVUKs are very popular here.

Sosa:

The KLVUKs usually don't come with sheaths. Most "village fit and finish" knives do come with sheaths.

Oops, cross-posted with Bawanna who said essentially the same thing in fewer words.

Villager fit and finish just means the fit/finish is more than good enough for a "user" knife rather than something you might display. If you want a tool to work with its the way to go. I don't think it has anything to do with handle size. It just means they didn't make it purdy for putting over your mantle or whatever.

I do have a couple villager finishes that are drop dead gorgeous though. They beg to be used but so so purty.
