I saw a guy in the Trade forum, say he had sent in his Para 2, to W/R, and was fresh. what or who is W/R??? Are these knives rebuildable? He said he got a new stop pin as well.

Thanks. Kind of a duh moment for me. So Spyderco can overhaul a knife, if you manage to wear it out?

They will repair or replace a knife for defects in material or workmanship. Damage from abuse, misuse, unauthorized disassembly and reassembly or ordinary wear are not covered by warranty, nor in my opinion should they be.

Nor did I say i thought they should do it for free. I don't think I insinuated that, now did I? I merely asked if certain knives are rebuildable. Thank you for your input, in spite of it being from left field.

I guess I was unclear. If you wear it out, they will probably just tell you to retire it. In most cases, the parts and labor to rebuild one will cost more than a new knife, and they probably wouldn't have parts available for anything over a few months old. I suppose if you wanted it done badly enough and didn't mind spending a few hundred dollars, you might talk them into rebuilding one.

Sorry if I took it unnecessarily wrong. I think in terms of things like Striders, Hinderers, ZT's, and such. They are serviceable for a very long time. I am confused about not having parts for more than a few months though. They wouldn't have parts for things like a Millies and knives such as? I understand that things wear out, and you buy more. I am the very last guy to ever abuse a warranty/service, that a company offers. Other than being a fireman, I own a small company. We offer a product, that has a warranty, and I have seen it all. I know how these things work. I guess in the end, I was only asking about what could/could not be done in the lifetime of a knife. After all, I think enough about them right now, to be switching all my knives over to them.

L2bravo, there are a couple of reasons why Spyderco can't match companies like Strider, Hinderer, or CRK in terms of rebuilding or 'Spa Treatments' as some people call them.

First there is the issue of scale. Spyderco makes more knife models than all three of the these other brands combined. If you look at all the models and major variants they have made in the last few years, you would need a warehouse just for spare parts.

The other issue is that Spyderco follows a a manufacturing model that incorporates running changes to their knives as they either identify a problem with a model or find a slightly better way of doing it. I believe the term is something like CQA (Continuous Quality Assurance). So even if you have the exact same model THIS year as the one from LAST year, the parts from one knife might not fit the other.

On the other hand, within their scope of work, they can and do quite a bit. They can sharpen the knife back to a factory edge, regrind the blade if the tip gets broken, replace screws that might have fallen out, and in some cases even retune the knife to get proper blade centering.

If the problem is a true warranty issue and they can't fix it, they will issue you a credit towards another Spyderco knife.

All in all, I think that they do an awesome job considering the mass different models they have produced.
