What is with the Flashback!?!? Updated

Received the Flashback with spear point ti-ni blade and the deployment and disengagement are extremely difficult. I understand this is due to the coil, which is needed for the speed of opening, but wow, the disengagement is stronger than any knife I have ever owned. Not a fun knife at all and will most likely end up on the bottom of my EDC box.

Update: Sent back to SOG for repair or replacement for the new version that is supposedly easier on the thumbs.

Update 2: Received the knife back from SOG and it is easier to open and close than the previous model. SOG customer service is A+ in my book!

For what they run, sounds like a sell/trade is in your future. Do you think it'll ease up over time?

I think all springs eventually loosen up a little. My biggest gripe is the closing being extremely harsh, but I'm getting more use to it. It is what it is... not a knife I want to open and close a lot.

45 days in and the Flashback is finally starting to grow on me. It's fast and locks up like a bank vault, except for a small amount of up and down blade movement typical of the Flash series. If not for the disengagement making the knife almost impossible to close with one hand and the aggressive amount of force needed to deploy, I wouldn't hesitate to buy another. One thing too consider is that you can open the Flash 2 just as fast as the Flashback if you use the same amount of thumb pressure on the F2 as it takes to open the Flashback. Although, in the long run I think you will find the Flashback a superior knife to the Flash 2 based on the ruggedness of the Flashback alone.

Sent the Flashback to SOG yesterday after learning a few weeks ago there is a new version available that is supposedly easier to open and close. I sent their customer support an email to see if I needed a return authorization number and within 48 hours they responded saying no, and to just send it to them with a brief description of the problem and a return address. SOG said they will repair or replace the knife and send it back to me asap. We'll see about that last part lol.

Received the Flashback back from SOG today and must say their turnaround time was exceptional. The knife does seem to be easier to deploy and close, but not by much. At least now I can use the knife. Thanks SOG!

eta: SOG sent me a new knife rather than repair the one I sent in, which is perfectly fine with me. Lockup appears to be better than on the first model too. I don't notice the blade being any slower on the new Flashback either. That was one of my concerns when I sent it in. Happy, Happy, Happy :)

Glad you're happy with your new one. The man that owns Sog seems like a good guy.

Yes indeed, it says a lot about a company that stands behind their products like SOG does. Now I'm waiting on the SOG Mini Flashback to be released.

I've enjoyed my Flashback quite a bit. It's clearly the fastest assisted opener in my arsenal, and the design is unique without being kooky. And its got the deepest clip I have ever seen on a production knife. Good stuff.

Yes, this a great knife.

It really "snaps" into the open with authority!

The handle design is interesting too.

I wasn't sure that it would work for me, but I was pleasantly surprised when I cut it out of the clamshell packaging.
