First post guys. I have been lurking around in here from time to time but just decided to post. My son wanted to look at gear and we decided to see what others are carrying for hawks. The reason I am asking the question: "What is your hawk used for?" is because I see a lot of hawks on the net and in here even that make my 12 year old son laugh. There is so much crap when it comes to design that it is unbelievable. Now I could understand it, if it was for a collector but very few seem to be designed for use.

My hawk is a modified 3J with a 22" hickory handle. I will try and take a picture when I get to the shop in the morning. I welded a 1"x1.5"x.75" steel tab on the back for a hammer head. My handle has also been fire hardened and thin serrated grooves have been cut into the handle for grip.

My hawk was modified when I was trapping Lynx in Idaho and had to build cubbies for sets. The modifications came from using the hawk in the field and seeing that it had flaws in design.

I used my hawk for cutting boughs, hammering large 20p. nails, cutting bailing wire, hammering stakes, digging in the snow and at times in the dirt, gathering wood for small fires (wrong tool for cathering large amounts of wood). I have even killed a grouse by throwing side ways and hitting it with the handle. Once I finnished dispatching a deer by hitting it in the back of the head with the hammer end I fashioned on the hawk.

I have tried to forge a few hawks but still am having problems with my forge welds and until I can get it down I have put that on hold.
