I am having a tough time deciding on a standard knife size. I make handmade knives on the side and need some hands on input from knife nuts. Seems like when I go for a 8 to 9 inch overall design I go ahead and step it up to the 11 to 13 inch overall.

What I am asking for is your most used design, blade length, and overall length.

I know the options are vast!!

Thanks for your input. :D

On belt folder...Buck 110 size. Clipped to pocket.... Delica,Small Sebenza. Fixed blade I prefere narrow 4" ,Shadow III ,Cumming Custom. Second on fixed is the Vangard size.4 1/4" but wider.

I am trying to rework this

design be be in the most commonly used size range. The one pictured has an overall of 6.25" and a blade of 2.5". Last night I cut out a larger pattern @ 8.25" overall and a blade length @ 3.5". We'll see how she feels.

Thanks for the input.

3" range on folder and 4" range on fixed. I just prefer a smaller blade and don't consider mine for SD duty. For SD I use something that goes bang.

Thanks guys. 3.5" is what I cut out last night....I'll see how she feels in about 2 weeks...

For a folder, handle would be 4 ¼” with a blade of just under 3”; to keep it legal. If legality weren’t a problem, I would go around 3 ¼” to 3 ½” blade length. For my general use, I prefer a blade about 1/8” to 5/32” thick, not because I am prying, but it gives a much better feeling of confidence. IMHO the closest to ideal blade shape for all around use (not skinning or hunting, however) is A. G. Russell’s general purpose blade from his one hand knife. The best shape for a handle would be similar to the older Benchmade/Crawford Leopard knives.

For a fixed blade knife, it depends greatly on its intended purpose. For general use, I prefer blades about 4”-5” long with a handle about 4 ½” to 4 ¾” long. I really don’t have much to offer in fixed blade design since I rarely use them. They are my favorite due to simplicity and strength, but in my current environment extremely impractical. Just my thoughts.

spyderco dragonfly serrated, its light & sharp.
Probably will continue that way until i find a multi that i'm happy with.

Fixed Blade - 3 7/8" blade, 7 7/8" OAL
Folder - 3" blade

Despite this, my appetite for longer fixed blades has grown.

3.5 to 4"

Usually is a dominator that I use as a edc. Sometimes it is case brothers whittler, or a boker whittler, or a SAK farmer.

1) Wusthof 10" kitchen knife.
2) Victorinox SAK.
3) Large Regular Sebenza.

kee :)

For a pocket folder, I like 3 3/4 to 4 1/4. For a belt folder, 5 to 5 1/2 is ideal. For a fixed blade, I like in the 7" range on the blade.

Not counting kitchen knives, most of my knives fall between 3" and 4.5".

The most used size is about 3".

Allen.
