What is your opinion on SCHRADE?

I just browsed the manufacturers section and didn't see a dedicated section for SCHRADE products. Why is this? Does BladeForums not like SCHRADE or something?

Manufacturers only get a section if they ask for one and have a representative to moderate it.

But no, since being purchased since Taylor Brands, it is not generally known for its quality. Brands built around being cheap at the sake of quality don't tend to collect a hobbyist following, so there isn't much discussion of current production around here. In the Traditionals section, there are certainly folks who collect the older ones, however.

Thanks for clarification kreole. Would have liked to see Puma included. Understand they to have german quality blades but also some models made in China and Spain. Recall when they were produced in Germany in the 60s or early 70s.

You get what you pay for in most cases. Someone bought me a schrade set and I used them for work knives. I was pleasantly surprised, given they cost next to nothing.

Some manufacturers still made some stuff here in the US, just smoke screen
for not so observant customers !

was my first pocket knife back in 1995.. boy was that thing trash, it was my first family camping trip where all the boys got to have knives. thing was dull in the first day of whittling sticks.

Always makes me think of the Shrade Sharpfinger when I hear Shrade mentioned. Back in the 60s I remember a subscription to Outdoor Life magazine got you a U.S.A made Sharpfinger sent for free. Did not look like a bad skinning knife. Ashame to see quality go down the crapper.

As an amateur who's planning on buying my first real knife (and I'd like this thing to last me a lifetime and not ever fail me), I was considering the Schrade SCHF59, for $50 CAD. I was a little skeptical of the price, however, being that I felt it wouldn't meet the needs I desired, as the price seemed a bit low.

I'm thinking I was right to assume this and made the RIGHT decision to not pull the trigger?

It's one of those brands that you'll be hard pressed to find a decent knife..but every now and then..when the stars and moons align..they may make a decent fixed blade

Who cares about Schrade !
But every month next and next manufacturer goes same crappy way out !
That's the problem, BIG ONE.
So who is your favourite manufacturer who has not gone the same crappy way out? If you don't mind me asking

The old Schrade, Schrade USA, closed shop in 2004. The brand name was purchased by Taylor and revived, bringing back many of the Old Timer patterns. However, the best that can be said about the new Schrade Old Timers is that they're "ok for the money", but since they're very cheap, that pretty much means that it's crap.

You could probably have an entire forum just dedicated to Schrade Old Timer knives. There's a lot of them out there and they do have a following. Of course when they were making those Old Timers in the 1960s they were also making Buck 110s, so they had a lot of heavy competition right out of the gate. I still have an Old Timer Gunstock Trapper 194 OT from long ago.
