What is Your SAK Layer Limit?

How many layers on a Swiss Army Knife is your maximum in a situation where you will carry it on your person? What happens to be your preferred carry method? Any alternatives to dropping it in the front pants pocket and having it turn sideways? Thanks all.

To me it depends on my jeans, my Old Navy Jeans coin pocket can fit a Vic SwissChamp. On my supposedly "Nicer jeans" (Lucky's Brand) have coin pocket can barely fit a zippo. If the vic doesn't fit in the coin pocket I slide it vertically against my wallet, and my limit there is 3 or 4 layers, but I prefer using my super tinker in that situation.

3 layers. Anything bigger than that and it's time to swap it for a leatherman.

3 for me as well. If I'm not carrying anything BUT a SAK, then it's usually the Super Tinker.

Two layers for a walking around knife. Any more and it's time for a tool kit. Tinker, recruit, Wenger SI, pioneer/old soldier. That's it for my normal drop in pocket and go on down the road. I've actually carried a bantam with it's one skinny layer and been happy.

Carl.

Two layers for me as well. Alox Cadet and Electrician - adore that knife - and an Executive. I have a couple of four-layer knives, V. Explorer and W. EvoGrip 18, but they just sit at home.

You could add a verticle line of stitches in your pocket, creating a slot to hold a knife upright.

Three layers for me, but anymore than two and I usually use a pouch.

^^^^ Couldn't have said it better. I usually have my Vic Super Tinker on me. If they'd make something like the Vic Compact w/ Phillips screwdriver and reamer (instead of corkscrew and hook), then that'd be perfect for me.

I can get used to 4 layers. My favorite is the Explorer Plus. But after I go without it for a while, it takes some time to get used to it in the pocket again.

Technically the Farmer is a three layer.

But the Alox covers are thinner than the Celadon and aluminum scales. The saw is so thin I count it as half a layer.

The Farmer fits in my pocket just fine.

Ideally 2 layers for me, but I can handle 3 on the Alox models if I have to. With that said, I carry a mini champ on my keychain and that's a chunky little bugger so I guess I'm not that fussy, the short, fat profile of the mini champ makes it feel a bit more like a key fob than a knife which makes it feel more in place. I can't handle the 3 and 4 layer 91mm plastic scaled models though, they just feel too brick-like for me.

I prefer a two layer, maybe a three once is awhile if it is along the lines as the super tinker. I would go up to four with an Explorer if I had a P-7 clip, which I dont yet? :)

3. Three is the magic number to me as far as number of tools and comfortable carry goes.
