Desert Ironwood? Would a custom 119 with a Desert Ironwood handle be worth 100.00? The story I got at the show was that it was custom built for someone with a hand too big for the normal Phenolic handle to fit his hand right. The knife has a tan sheath marked "119 CUSTOM".

Mitch, I'm sure the custom shop built it for sale to a customer . Its worth in good shape much more as Ironwood has gone up recently . DM

Mitch, if you like it buy it... Any Custom 119 with DIW is worth $100... Is it mark Custom on the blade... Any Pics??? Some DIW is really Beautiful... and some is just ok... Any paper work on it or Box... It almost cost that much for a cherry wood one, I think... ITE ...

I'm still wondering what Ironwood is. I'm 99% sure I'll get the knife. The knife looks to be an early to mid 70's model as the pummel matches my 2 line inverted. The only place that has the word custom is the sheath. The knife is in Plant City so I won't havee any trouble getting my hands on it.I talked to Leroy and he said that the custom shop didn't always put custom on the blade. As soon as I get my hands on it, I'll post pics.

Desert ironwood is a very dense wood, and pretty pricey. This is a photo of one of my knives with it on.

Anybody can buy the sheathes marked "Custom."

Impossible to say if the work was done by Buck.

Desert ironwood can make a beautiful handle, but you never said what it looked like.

If it's a good-looking piece of wood and you like it yourself and want to keep it--it's a good deal.

I wouldn't buy it just because it "MIGHT" be from the Custom Shoppe. There are many people who might have done that work other than Buck.

Far more important is that the wood looks good, the work is professional and you like it a lot.

:)

I was told it came from a BCCI member along with 10-15 other BCCI member knives and originally cost 250.00. I'm supposed to get the members name and contact info so I'll be able to verify the facts.

If that story is true then some of the older Club members here might remember that particular model. Couldn't have been all that many BCCI 119s in desert ironwood.

Now I have only been a member of the BCCI since 2005, but, I have never read anything on a IW 119 sold to club members.

The link to Gordon's IW 119 sure make the old ticker beat a little faster. Gordon informed me that there are different grades of IW and some are very nice and some just so-so. The IW slabs on my Buck 905 B&C LE are just so-so IMHO and Buck could have used any brown died would and got the same affect....enough thread drift.

Post some photo's of that 119 when you have it in hand.

This is significant. Name means nothing. I've seen UGLY ironwood and KOA and other materials that people have tried to sell as something special. No, that's bogus.

I won't own it unless it looks excellent and I don't care what the name of it is.

If it looks like mudwood........it's mudwood.

So let the buyer beware the people who hype knives. Sometimes it's all hype.

Agreed. A friend of mine (and Randall dealer) always says "buy the knife, not the story." It's so true.

Mitch, I looked at the pics, and I like it. I'd pay $100 for that.

And what's this about ugly koa? There's no such thing.

(Just kidding - of course there is. Not this piece, though.)

Yes, well, I think we've all been around here long enough that nothing more needs to be said about that.

Yes......your KOA is beautiful.

:)

The 119......Might be ok......I'm not sure if the pictures have revealed its true soul and beauty.

It's interesting.

(How'd I do?)

Much better;);)
Actually, When I can take the knife outside in natural light the pictures should be alot better.
