What I've been working on...

New guy here. :) I've been working on titanium-izing some SAKs for a few months. Ti liners and pins and possibly some high end blade steels down the road. I'm no knifemaker (not til I finish one of these) but I am a machinist and jeweler by trade and I've been making jewelry from all the best knife materials for 15 years so I'm in my element with this. I'm actually setting my little workshop up for small scale production of several different configurations of TISAK as I work out each step. Some will have carbon or G10 scales, solid 1/8" titanium scales, or stabilized hardwood. I have some that have the blades and tools reamed out to 1/8" for stainless pivots that have torx screws on each side and the blades will be replaceable. This is going slow and meticulous because I like beautifully finished and flawless things quite a bit and I'm not going to turn out junk. It may be a few more weeks before I have anything finished to show but I'm having a blast with this and it will get done.

This picture will take you to a photobucket album where you can see where I'm at.

very cool. You are embarking on a fun project there. I did something similar last Christmas for my Father-In-Law. I took apart a well used Vic Recruit and replaced the outer liners & scales with 316 stainless using a double bolster design with a chunk of G10 dovetailed into the middle to replicate the look of an old jacknife. I like the idea of a SAK you can break down for cleaning & modification, but we'll see how that works in practice. Keep us posted.

Well, it's been a while but so far so good. Liners and scales replaces with titanium. .005 phosphor bronze washers to keep the tools off the liners. I still need to sand the hollow titanium rivets down, polish the sides and get someone to laser the Victorinox shield on it for me. Then I make a bail for it like the older ones had and it should be just about done.

great work, can we get a side pic to see what it looks like ?

anyway great work.

Still have some sanding, rivet finishing and polishing to do on the sides and I have to get the shield lasered on. Then I won't be so shy about showing it.

Beautiful work.
I think you're looking at a very limited market, but they are very nice knives.
Why not pantograph engrave the scales? All it would take is a template.

Wow! A compliment from Bill DeShivs. I have arrived. :) Thank you sir.

I wish I could take photos that would show it but after hours of rubbing it down to 2000 grit and polishing with Flitz the titanium looks like a mirror and I can't find any more flaws to rub out. The pantograph is a good idea. I could solder the nickle silver shield from the plastic scale to a piece of copper for a template. Hmmm...

Usually, a pantograph template has to be at least 2 X the size of the engraving.
