What Katana should my Dad buy?

So my Mom and Dad just got back from a trip to Japan. He now wants a Japanese sword or a Katana/Wakazashi/Tanto combo. He wants to put it on the wall circa 1980's Magnum PI decor. Not that he is going into combat with it but he would want it to be able to. Probably most of us would I guess for the coolness factor.

He asked me to see what he could get in the 1500 dollar range. I would appreciate any recommendations thanks!

I think at that price range he should check online auctions for a Hanwei set in good condition. I went through a similar thing and I now have an old Hanwei "bushido" katana and wakizaishi set in my closet. I'd sell the swords to him for a lot less than his stated budget. I'm sure there are some other members on here who could make similar offers too.

Diasho - two sword set with matching koshirae ( fittings). Most either display a wakizashi and tanto, or a katana and wakizashi. Hanwei makes good swords at reasonable prices, but any Chinese sword will work for a wall hanger that stays in its saya. Adding a tanto to make a three sword set is nice, but not necessary.

I really like the practical katana plus from Hanwei.
I got the practical katana... dang, almost 20 years ago now and it’s held up to all kinds of crazy abuse, and that thing cuts like crazy!
I cut through a 3” thick oak sapling in one cut with it a couple times! Of course I know how to cut with a katana and I’m a big guy... anyway, it cuts well and it won’t break the bank. On the down side they aren’t super flashy, and they are not traditionally made. They look like it, but the handle and all that stuff are permanently affixed.

How about Bugei? Quality is decent. I have a Daisho from about 18 years ago that I used for Iaido in my younger days.

Make him one
I'm trying everything to get my teenage son into it and failing but just waiting for him to show any interest and we will be making a katana together
A dad can dream
