WEnt on a fire brick run, got 2 different kinds

some smaller ones which are maybe 1.5" thick, and some bigger ones which are maybe 2, or 2.5 x 4" and 7 or 8 " long

i think the big ones are soft ones for a forge, but how soft do they have to be?

You should be able to carve it with a screwdriver fairly easily for it to be soft. Are you using propane or solid fuel? You want the soft for propane but hard firebricks are good enough for solid.

I was going to do propane, i attacked the brick with an old knife, and its taken me 5 min to get a dent in it thats 3/4" by 3/4" deep

hmm, this one isnt too hard to cut, but im not sure if it cuts like drywall
is there a way to visually tell?

mine has different fibers of stuff in it, some red bits

Soft firebricks are so soft you can chew through them and not notice it.

Don't.
