What kind of handle do you prefer?

My personal preference is finger-grooved handle, preferably some exotic wood.

There are several types in the market right now. Some are curved, like a baggage handle. Then there are the straight ones, the coffin-shaped types and the smooth-round ones.

I suppose those with big hands would prefer the bigger handles. Some people like the dainty types, small enough to fit snugly in one's small palms.

For me, I like a handle that is slightly longer than average. Something to do with leverage.

I like G10, it comes in many colors, its light, has good grip, Cheap and its durable and can be dropped on the ground and not break/chip/crack.

You don't say whether it's on a folder or a fixed blade, or what it's primary use is. These things matter, in the case of a work knife I want something comfortable, that won't slip or get cold.

In that case my preference for a folder G-10 or Carbon Fiber, with not so much finger grooves, as cut outs. Micarta is knice on a dress folder, but without liners it doesn't make for a real strong work blade.

On a fixed blade I like a ergonomic rubberized handle like those on some of the Cold Steel Knives. If I'm going to do a lot of camp work, or other outside work, the rubberized handles tend to grab my hand better when sweaty, and absorb shock better, as in the case of splitting kindling. Also it tends to match my body temp better.

Now if your talkin' bout Display Knives, whatever tickles your fancy, Stag, Wooly Mammoth, Resin Impregnated Hard Woods, they're all beautiful, and up to the preference of the individual user/collector.

At least that's my two cents worth. :)

I also prefer G-10 like my EDC Spyderco Military.
For more elegance knives I like thuja wood.

Some knives are carried a lot, and used a little. For those I like a slender profile, like a Spyderco Endura, or Delica.
Some knives are used a lot, and carried a little. Thats when I like the guards, finger grooves and hand filling shapes.

I like G-10 with a finger groove for a really secure grip. I also like handles like my LCC, which is nicely contoured for a good feel in your hand.

The black G-10 finger-grooved handle of my REKAT Sifu(s) feel GREAT and very secure in MY hand. (I have rounded and smoothed the edges of the G-10 scales, (and the stainless liners), and that makes a BIG difference in the comfortable feel.).:).

Just love the G10 on my BM Nimravus and Ares Axis. The rubber grips on my SOGs are also very comfortable and provide a secure grip.

I like Micarta. No square corners, deep finger choil, slight texture. Newt Livesay makes knives that have the best working knife handles IMHO. For a dress knife, I like MOP, Abalone, and well-figured wood.

I tend to prefer natural materials, like stag.:)

I'm with Golok on the slightly longer than average handles, especially on fixed blades. But I don't care for finger grooves. They usually don't fit my fingers. If I had a handle custom made for my hand with finger grooves, I might change my mind, though.

I like some kind of palm swell and a deep choil is nice.

My Marbles Fielcraft with the Cocobolo Carver grip handle is a good fit for me, and pretty secure even when bloody because of the excellent design. It just sucks into your hand.

Of course, I like most everything about my Fieldcraft.:D

I like different handle materials for different reasons:

Micarta for its simple beauty.

Zytel for its "price to performance factor" and resistance to dings and scratches.

Aluminum for its light-weight rigidity.

Wood and brass for that old-timey-getting-back-to-your-roots feeling.

Steel for its strength and weight (some knives feel better when they're alittle heavy in the pocket).

Good luck,
Allen.
