What kind of hunting do you do, and what knife/gun combo do you use for the hunt?

I love to hunt, and I try to stay in the woods as much as possible during hunting season like the rest of you hunters out there. So, what do you hunt, and what gun(or bow)/knife combo do you use to get the job done? For me:

Dove hunting- usually a Browning BPS Engraved .12ga and Case Trapper.

Squirrel- Remington 870 or the BPS .12ga and Spyderco Endura Serrated.

Deer(Bow season)- Browning compound and Tim Wegner Spyderco.

Deer(rifle season)- Browning A-bolt 7mm Mag W/3x9x40 Leupold and Tim Wegner.

Duck- Browning BPS .10GA Stalker and Spyderco Endura Serrated.

Hog- S&W 629 .44Mag and Marlin .35Rem with my old Puma Stag hunting knife and my trusty Pit if I want to catch him alive.

Lets here what your using.

For all large game up here, moose, caribou, bear and hopefully Dall's sheep some day, I use a Browning A-Bolt in 7mm with open sights. I'll put a nice Leopold scope on when I go into the mountains for sheep, but it's unnessessary for moose and caribou, and usually just gets in the way.
For rabbits, beaver, ptarmigan, and other small critters, I like a .22mag lever action ruger or a 10/22. For waterfowl, and sometimes rabbits I use an 870 remington 12 ga.
Regarding cutlery, when it comes to big moose I take along my Dozier Elk Hunter. For everything else, my Pro Skinner or Yukon Hunter, also by Dozier.

I will one day (soon I hope!!)combine a Browning BAR semi auto .243 with a Dozier Slim Outdoorsman, for the ultimate spring barrenland caribou duo.

Let's see.

Dove/Duck> Mossberg 500 12ga., Spyderco Pro-grip PE

Deer/Hog> Bow season> PSE Durango, Spyderco Wegner PE

Deer/Hog> Gun Season> Remington 7mm-08 w/Simmons 44 mag scope, Spyderco Wegner.

Hogs whenever> Ruger Mini-30 w/ Simmons Whitetail Hunter scope, either a Junglee Tactical Fighter Fixed blade or Shrade PH-1 Fixed blade.

But to tell the truth, the Spyderco Wegner or Pro-grip is always with me on any hunting trip.

deer- bow PSE one cam pro 60lbs dozier slim outdoorsman
deer- rifle .243 savage 110 redfield 5 star 3x9x40 dozier slim outdoorsman

goat- rifle 30-30 open sights dozier

pig- rifle .243 dozier

birds- 870 remington dozier

For hogs I carry a 338 A-Bolt backed up with a Gary Reeder revolver in 500 Linebaugh (and yes, I've been charged and that's the reason for the heavy artillery). I use a Chris Peterson damascus skinner with osage orange handle for fine work and a large knife (like a Busse 7) for heavy duty chores. However, after Cliff Stamp suggested an Uluchet (www.silverstar.com/turnermfg), I'm going to carry that instead of the large knife.

I'll probably go with the same rifle and cutlery for elk, but pack a lighter revolver. Maybe a 454 Casull or some other mid-size handgun (just joking!).

Takao

A man after my own heart. I can't wait till I can get a Slim Outdoorsman!!!:)

Is it as good as I think?

I love my Redhawk .454, but I am more efficient with my Smith. I am going to have to graduate to a Dozier sooner or later, that is if I can get off my pocket book.

remington 1100 12 for birds, remington 700 ADL 30-06' for deer, etc sometimes my pre WW2 savage 99 in 300 savage, but i'm trying to retire that one - carry my glock 32C 357SIG or my S&W L frame 357mag w/a 6" bbl sometimes, and sometimes the super blackhawk, but gen'ly the glock now - carry a old buck sheath knife (for luck) and a good folder too - my wife uses a S&W 1000 20 for birds, a browning BLR 243 for deer, and carries a walther PP 22 pistol, and a folder only, i have to do the hard stuff lol so she dont need a sheath knife......

Squirrel and Grouse

Guns: Rem 870 12 gauge or JC Higgens bolt action 20gauge (squirrel only), Ruger GP100 4" SS (180gr handloads)
Knives: Schrade Golden Spike and Remington Waterfowler (rem choke tool built in, blade perfect for small game)

Deer

Blackpowder Deer: Remington 700BP

General Firearms Deer: Winchester 94 Trapper 357mag (for "brush" hunting, use same handloads as above), GP100.
I am building a Mauser sporter in 30-06 for "stand" hunting (need to cut/weld bolt handle to be complete).
Knives: Schrade Golden Spike, REKAT Pioneer II

Spring Gobbler (turkey)
Gun: Rem 870 12gauge, GP100
Knife: Remington Waterfowler or REKAT Pioneer II

I carry the GP100 whenever I can while hunting because you don't always have your rifle/shotgun with you (think "call of nature"). Opportunities/threats tend to come at those times.

Hey takao: do you have problems with rust in Hawaii? What do you use for fishing (if you fish)? I love my Slim Outdoorsman too, but I don't hunt.

I wish someone would tell me how to get pictures on the boards. I finally bought a camera but I have no clue how to put one on a post!!!!wolf

Wolf,

There are two ways. You can upload images to a web site and use the "" tags on either side of the image to make it show up in a post (where the web address of the picture is in between the IMG and /IMG tags).

You can also purchase a Premium or Gold membership and upload the images directly when you post. If you don't wish to do that, you could find a Gold or Premium member to upload the images for you, after you e-mail them to the person in question.

Squirrel: NEF Sportster .22 with 4X Simmons
Deer: Remington 700BDL with 4X Redfield

Schrade Sharpfinger handles all gutting/skinning chores. All it needs is a sheath from Normark.

For deer, I use a 12 gage Mossberg 500 with Federal sabots, or a PSE bow I bought from my father-in-law.
For squirrels, before early deer bowseason starts I use an old Marlin bolt action 22 that was my grandfather's, or a stainless Ruger 10-22.
After early bowseason starts I use the Mossberg.
And for rabbits, I use the Mossberg.
If and when I dove hunt, I'll use the Mossberg.
I like my Mossberg, but an 870 or 11-87 would be nice, and I've always wanted a Browning BPS 20 guage.
As for knives, I usually use a fixed blade Browning featherlite drop-point, and a Buck 110 or 112, a Case trapper with CV steel, or my Old Timer sharpfinger and 8-OT.

Steve

Deer: Bow Golden Eagle super hawk, easton classics with 2 blade Mangus

Gun,Browning bps 12 ga. and Dan Wesson 44.mag

Knives,i like to vary them always, some that I use alot,Schrade LB7,Case Trapper, small handmade fixed blade of unknown maker.

Hey bow starts Monday morning!! I'll be in my stand bright "n" early:) :)

For deer I use either a Remington 600 in 6mm Remington or a Marlin 444P Guide Gun in 444 Marlin with either these customs and either this or these.

When I hunt squirrels I use one of three Marlin 39's, a Browning T-bolt, or Dad's Clark Custom 10-22. For a knife anything handy.
