After reading Gus's thread "Nice whittler for little$" I wondered what could be picked up for $20. So here's the game...with $20 and one week see what kind of knife you can buy. Let's end this next Sunday evening, August 4th. When you find your knife tell us what you found and if you can post a picture of it.

So get out there and hit those pawn shops, knife shows, garage sales and flea markets.

Hmmmm, I wonder what I'll find.

A Queen 'Coke Bottle' (w/Single 'Queensteel' blade and a Winterbottom handle) on sale at SMKW - eknifeworks for $9. OR a Kissing Crane large wooden handled stilleto from the same store, for $15. I ordered both last week before this contest, but as they came in today, I guess either one qualifies. ;)

OK, here is my entry. Although "ditty-dot" Case's wouldn't be my dad's favorite choice, I just couldn't pass this'n up. It's a Case 61050, with 9 dots, which I believe was made in '71. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Pakkawood scales, obviously carbon steel saber ground blade. Excellent spring that snaps the blade like a trap. It came in a Schrade "Old Timer" belt sheath. I picked it up at a pawn shop on the "seedy" side of the metropolitan area of Denver. After a little negotiation I purchased the ensemble for the sum of $15 bucks plus tax for a total of $16.13. I was trying to hold out until this weekend for the gun show in town to see what I could find there, but you gotta buy 'em when you find 'em.

Schrade Old Timer knives at many brick'n'mortar shops as well as online stores, including e-bay.

Bought a new (no box) Camillus Yell0 Jaket Whittler at an auction for $15. It is a good stout knife even though it is not a "true" whittler with the split backspring. There were several custom made knives but out of my budget. I was happy to get the Camillus for $15.

Yeah I'd second that Camillus in that price range.., darn good knife for the money...

This is fun. I have been hitting a few pawn shops and other places when I have had time. No luck on the under 20 so far, but did pick up a 77 Case 6383 in excellent shape for just a little more.

Let's keep shakin' those bushes and see what falls out :D.

This reminds me...

A guy came into the store with his kid the other day. "I need a really good pocket knife for my boy!" The guy's eyeing the Benchmades.

I proceed to ask about his particular preferences, getting ready to suggest something. "Well, it has to be really sharp!" the guy says. "And really strong because he's gonna use it at camp! And it has to be under 20 bucks!"

Of course, I laugh a little, indicating that I know he is only kidding about that last part.

He wasn't kidding.

He ended up all pissed off because he had seen the "same exact knife" as one of our Spyderco's in a catalogue, and they only wanted $15 for it. Why the hell were we asking $50? What the hell is the matter with us? Trying to rip them off!

Anyone else have customers like this? (I mean in any kind of store, not necessarily a knife store!)

I went to the gun show in Denver this weekend.... There were quite a few nives there but only one really took my fancy. It was a Case 61098 big toothpick, 10 dots (I think, my eyes cant count them little dots 'specially when there grimey), red bone. The bummer was one of the scales was cracked clear in half from one side to the other, through the center pin. The seller was asking $120 for it. I had to pass on it. In the pawn shops I see a lot of Schrade LB 7's, Buck 110's and clones. So far, todate, I have picked up 5 Buck 110's, 2 LB 7's and a LB 7 with nickle bolsters marked "Harley-Davidson" in pawn shops. I bought a WWII Western double edged commando knife and made a quick $50 bucks reselling it. A friend of mine picked up a real nice Robeson whittler at an ARC store. I really enjoy finding a bargain and then showing it off during coffee break. But when someone else finds the treasure I bum out. Keep looking, if you find one let the rest of us hear about it.
