the title is self explanatory. i think its a fun subject to talk about

i like pocket knives and i like to scrutinize them. 2-3.5 in tops, no tools, and preferably 1, maybe 2 blades. i love axis lock, lock back, and slipjoints but not liners framelocks or other types in general. i prefer a drop point or wharncliffe blade. slipjoint or not i prefer stainless steel...anything from surgical, 440c, 154cm, vg10, to s30v are fine by me. just no d2 or carbon steel in my pocket knives. no coatings or serrations. i like composite handles like g10, but not carbon fiber which never looks decent. i also dislike steel/aluminum and wood handles but titanium has some appeal for whatever reason. i have a weakness for blue or turqouise colored handles. the kulgera is to die for. also, i like them to be very lightweight because of the way it feels in hand. for daily carry, im a one knife person. no multi tools or little saks on my keychain and no la griffes around my neck.

when i go backpacking or just camping i always bring a big fixed blade. i love fixed blades. not little 5" ones, 7-9 is more like it. then again, scandis are cool. but khukris sure arent. anyway, i like carbon steel bowie blades, but dont care about the handle material or specifications at all really. just a big, $40, ergonomic if possible, hunk of 1095 to hack and throw and chop onions and cayenne peppers and kill mountain lions kodiak grizzly bears and komodo dragons for sport. also for cutting phone books to shreds. spray it with wd 40 and im a happy camper/backpacker.

how about you

I use my Spyderco Military for everything. S90v steel, carbon fiber, and less than 5oz. Best knife I've ever used.

I don't really have a type. To be honest, I am not sure many actually would. Of course, some will prefer a certain type of another, but that is always a case of preference. I like what I like, and don't like what I don't.

The only thing I could really call myself in terms of type, is maybe a Plain edge knife user? I hate serrations.

I am a aging urban homeowner who carries a knife because it's a handy tool to have in my pocket as I do fixits and yard work.

I grew up with slipjoints and still have a fondness for them. I also like one-hand openers with 3" blades because they are useful. So many times it takes two hands to set something up so you can cut it. For those times it sure is easy to reach in your pocket, open the blade with one hand and cut the item. So I often have a slipjoint in my front pocket and a one-hander clipped to my back pocket. I have no use for knives as weapons.

I don't have much budget with which to work (children in college and other issues.) so I am interested in good working knives with good steel that cut well. I can usually find a knife that interests me and meets my performance requirements for $50 or less. I only have a couple of knives that were more than that and nothing over $100.

I like knives with big handles, b/c of my hand size. So I usually carry my spydie police 3 or millitary. And for outdoor camping trips I like to use my TOPS Steel Eagle. :]

Not a fan of slipjoints. I prefer lock backs or framelocks. I have yet to exp the Axis lock but a mini grip is the next purchase.

Gimme micarta, G10, or FRN/Zytel, etc. for a handle. Metal shows scratches too easily and I dont like the stag, horn, etc type stuff.

2-3 inch blade. Nothing over 3 (stupid MI laws).

Damascus looks sweet but since I dont own safe queens, not sure I'd ever buy one. Since I dont own safe queens, I dont need mother of pearl, jade, gold inlays, etc.

Knives are tools and I treat them as such.

I'm too cheap to buy a Sebbie or Hinderer.

I like knives with around 3-5" of blade, with heaps of belly and curve(looks beautiful to me), I like to carry a sheeple friendly knife along with a nice medium sized EDC knife and sometimes a new knife with all that because I just got it, I like shiny blades, I don't mind slipjoints at all, I don't carry blades for self defense, I carry them because they are useful.

I dislike serrations simply because they are a pain in the ass to sharpen, I like to reprofile all my knives except some SAK's because I want my knives to zip through materials with no effort, I like affordable knives because I have no job and knives are very expensive where I live.

I'm a folder, single blade strong lock, robust, upper end in size, one hand opening, makes me feel like it's got me covered, type of knife packer. (and I'll carry something small sharp and unnoticeable to use so I can keep the bigger one unused, cause I'm weird like that:o)

I love all different kinds of knives. I have been refining my carry techniques and this is what it boils down to.

I carry a one hand opener right front. Sometimes, it is too handy.
I carry a SAK pioneer harvester by my wallet lf pocket. Saw, flat head screwdriver, awl, small hawk blade. Very handy, I use the flat head to pry if i ever need to, plus open beers! +1
Some sort of slippy bottom of right front. I like the nostalgia and time warp. Sometimes I use it on purpose to slow down the frantic pace that can develop in day to day life. The thinner (width and height) blades can do some chores that a one hand opener cannot.

I do own safe queens (quite a lot of them, actually), and prefer fixed-blade knives to folders. But, due to the issues inherent in living in a big city, it's a Gerber Freeman S30V liner-lock folder on my belt.

Likes: 154CM, VG-10 and AUS-8A type steels.
G-10 and T-6 handles.
Plunge locks and liner locks.
3.5" blades around 4oz.

Dislikes: Heavy folders.
High end steels like M2, D2, $30V.
Lockbacks (leverlocks).
Folders for SD....Something I will never do is use a folder for fighting. Maybe a short sword or dagger but not a folder.

I prefer full flat grinds (or as fully as possible). I prefer pocket knives with finger guards. I do not like liner locks. For handle slab material I prefer Micarta or possibly G10 if it is well done. Stainless steel is fine for an edc knife but I prefer carbon steels for hard use knives or tomahawks. I have a hard time paying $100 or more on a knife or hawk but will if it is substantially better then what is normally available and represents a very good buy for what I get.

2-3 inch blade. Nothing over 3 (stupid MI laws).

The way I read them, the 3 inch blade length only applies if you are carrying a knife with un-lawful intent. The only place blade lengths are mentioned are in the unlawful intent section and in the school area section. There is additional case law in which a person was carrying a knife over three inches and it was found to not be a weapon. However cities can pass their own ordinances, and Detroit does have a 3" ordinance, which since I go to school and work in detroit does limit what I can carry.

True. MPC 750.226 classifies a blade 3 inches or more as a dangerous weapon w/ unlawful intent. The hard part is proving intent. Rather then role my dice in court, I essentially limit myself to blades under 3 inches to avoid this problem. I live in Wayne and the police officers of Wayne and Canton both suggested I just stick to 3 inches or less to avoid any problems.

I'm a gadget/tool guy and collector, most of the time I carry a Leatherman, either a Wave or a Skeletool CX,and a Kershaw, used to be a Scallion but I just got a JYD so that's been in my pocket since.I do also carry a small SS,no name Sodbuster, that I use for cutting things that may screw up a good blade and occasionally I carry a slippy, usually a stockman either Case or Camillus. If I'm out somewhere,I sometimes carry a Case trapper in a belt sheath but it's usually as much for show as anything, kind of like a pocketwatch. Most of the other knives that I have are older folders that don't ever get used, just cleaned and fondled occasionally.:D

I am a Demo Knife kind of guy. I own pocket clip knives, pretty knives, ugly knives...but 90% of the time I am going to reach for the same Demo Knife that saw me through my career as a 19 Delta. It normally lives in the tool pocket of my jeans with a OD and Int'l Orange lanyard to make grabbing it easy. Just a basic hard working tool.

A Cavalry Scout

As seen by his Post Headquarters: A drunken, brawling, Jeep stealing, woman corrupting, liar, with a star sapphire ring, Rolex watch and Demo Knife.

As seen by himself: A tall, handsome, highly trained professional killer, lady magnet, star sapphire ring wearing, Demo Knife carrying Gentleman who is always on time due to the reliability of his Rolex watch.

As seen by his wife: A stinking member of the family who comes home once a year in the back door with a rucksack full of dirty laundry, a hard-on, and three months later goes out the front door for another year wearing his star sapphire ring, Rolex and Demo Knife.

As seen by his Commander: A fine specimen of a drunken, brawling. Jeep stealing, woman corrupting liar, with a star sapphire ring, Rolex watch and a Demo Knife.

As seen by the Department of The Army: An overpaid, over ranked tax burden who is indispensable because he has volunteered to go anywhere, do anything at any time as long as he can booze it up, brawl, steal Jeeps, corrupt women, lie, wear a star sapphire ring, Rolex watch and carry a Demo Knife.

As seen by the enemy: The meanest mother in the valley. With a Demo Knife.

I'm a all around kind of knife guy.

As long as it's made to last and is functional it's my type of knife, love them all.:)

One exception being the replaceable blade ones like Tiger Sharp and variations of. :barf: Not my cup of tea.

I like them all! The crappy ones give me something to gripe about, the good ones something to crow about....afterall talking knives is something I do when deer season is closed. Overall, my favorites are made by the people who've made blades for milleniums....the Japanese. Be prepared to dig into the pocket for a good one! I look at the steel more than anything. ZDP-189, VG-10, ATS-34, 154CM, S30V, Sandvik, and several others I favor. Some Japanese, some not. Mr. Glesser, Mike Stewart of Bark River, AG Russell, and the good folks at Kershaw will all give you hand in steel education. Take pot luck or take good advice!
