We're going back a ways now, but as a young Lt. any knife I was issued was tied to the billet I was filling and/or the type of training I was receiving at the time. In Quantico, where infantry training was obviously the order of the day, that meant I was issued one of the crappy old school bayonets - end of story. At the end of the year, this was turned back in prior to graduation. The exchange carried Ka-bars and many of us purchased them at our own expense and would carry them in our load out during field exercises. Later, in Pensacola, I was issued the Camillus pilot survival knife with my basic flight gear issue. It's kind of like a slightly miniaturized Ka-bar with the octaganol hammer butt cap. I don't think they ever asked for that one back as you carried this basic issue of flight gear with you from one duty station to the next. For the balance of my career, when in garrison, I don't think I ever carried anything more substantial than possibly a slender little folder with maybe a 2 1/2" blade. As you may know, Marines are pretty fanatical about their uniform appearance when in garrison even when wearing camouflage utilities. As a general rule, we didn't keep much in our front pockets.
