What kind of Knives?

What is the neck knife that Cody wears in Dual Survival & what does Dave use? Which one is a better knife?

Also, what do you guys think is a nice do-it-all survial knife? (doesn't have to be what they use)

If this has been answered somewhere - sorry. :)

Cody's knife is a mora and Dave's is his own design made by Blind Horse knives. I think Dave's knife would be decent with a flat grind or convex grind but a scandi grind on a 3/16" thick knife is stupid IMO. There's lots of knives that are good ones out there it just depends on what you want the knife to be able to do. I personally opt for a chopper of some sort in bad weather and will usually take a hawk or hatchet so my knife tasks can be accomplished with a SAK. In the summer I ditch the chopper in favor of a small belt knife. Right now I'm really liking my Gossman UNK in A2.

I could be wrong, but Dave's knife sure didn't look like it was scandi. From what I saw it looked to be full flat ground. ...I thought it was a pretty good looking knife.

I too like to have some kind of chopper with me, be it machete, bowie, hatchet, hawk. I'm a big believer of having more than one blade as well. I like to pair up a big knife with a smaller one. (or two)

I know the Mora is a great slicer, but I'd hate to have to rely on it as my ONLY blade out in the wild.

Others have already answered Cody and Dave's. As to what I would prefer, myself.. would be some sort of chopper. Of course, I would always have my Vic Farmer in my pocket too. There is no one knife that is best. It is all personal preference. I know of many people who like thin blades more, who like shorter blades more, thicker blades more... It is all up to the user to decide what is best for him.

Maybe he's using different knives but I know in at least one episode he had one of these on him.

Thanks guys. I saw Dave C. using one of the knives in the pic but I'm almost 100% sure it didn't have that grind on it and the thin sleek prfile suggests it was the longer one. It was shown in detail and that's it alright. It didn't seem to have any real noticeable grinding, just an edge on it - like a FFG or a convex edged model.

Appreciate the info. I thought there would be a lot of Bark River B-1 (or Gunny) & F-1 suggestions here?

I only have an RC-3MIL, RC-4 and a Kabar in the 3.5 to non-chopper size fixed blades. I'm looking for something a little less rough than the Esse's. Maybe they'd be better of slicing and stuff if I removed the coating especially the RC-4 could be good w/o the thick coating on it. :)

All of the knives you own and have mentioned are solid survival type knives for their class. The question now occurs on this idea of roughness with your knives. Are they rough looking or rough in use? Maybe expand on that.

I just was referring to the heavy coating on the ESEEs. I've stripped one of my Izulas years ago and it really cuts much nicer and sharpens better w/o the coating, than my coated ones. That's all I meant by that. I think the USMC Ka-bar I've got, which is the next bigger knife after the RC-4 is kinda big for a camp knife but would work. It's billed as a fighting knife anyway.

Like an earlier poster mentioned - where I live all you have to do is cut shavings and then scavenge sticks and larger peices for a nice fire. I use my Junglas and machetes more for clearing out brush along our property lines and that sort of thing. A 3.5 to 4" fixed blade and one of my beater folders or SAK will handle overnighters in the woods around my place. Thanks! :)

Anyone know if Cody uses a mora classic #1 or #2? im thinking it looks more like a #2

I love BHK knives but I'm dissapointed that they double the price of those knives assosiated with Dave Canterbury !

Then that would make those models a "no go" for me. That's lame unless it's a new or better creation. If they had a knife and he endorsed it, and they doubled the price - forget about it.

I think it was $130 when first introduced. Someone might correct me on this but I do know it jumped up a hell of a lot in price.I think $150-$200 would be a fairer price for such a knife.

Man that's some ugly price gouging :barf:

It pays to get a non celebrity designed knife  You could just get a knife like Cody's and spend $10 :D

I saw the Mora Classic 1 & 2 and I'm going to try the #2 - it was $15 shipped with a 4" blade. Not bad and it would be my first Mora.

I used a #2 Mora for camping at historical recreation events for about 15 years and never had any problems.
great for food prep and whittling.

I love the Tracker or the Tracker 2 knife by Tom Brown who is also a survival expert trained by a native american. Look Tom up very impressive man. Check out his Tracker Knife it is awesome. It has 3 grips, 1. is a long grip (Bottom of handle) for using it like a hatchet, 2nd is a middle grip for making arrow shafts (and there is a notch on this knife just for that, 3 standard grip for everything else. Plus the saw teeth actually work to saw things. And I like the steel used it is intended to be sharpened on almost any rock surface.
