What kind of oil do you use on your khuks?

I just got some mineral oil, i.e., "the salts" as used for constipation (I had to get some anyway for my fiance's parent's cat -- don't ask

) and applied that to my recently sharpened and polished 18" AK. Wondered what everyone else used.

Thanks!

Since the scabbard is made of wood, I use a
grease.White grease, electric clipper grease,
something along those lines.

Super Lube 2000, available at Wally World. It leaves a very durable PTFE film on metals that is both a high-speed, all temp lube and a protectant. One application on a Dremel tool cable drive has lasted nearly a year. Their own lube goes way after about six weeks. I've used it on pistol slide rails, actions, knife blades and folder pivots. Darn near as useful as WD-40, and doesn't clog your sinuses

I ust had a thought as I was responding to this thread.

Normally I use either the 'salts' with a little bit of clove oil thrown in.

When I go to store a blade I soak it in silicon oil.

BUT... the thought that I just had was, If I am going to be storing the knife I could use chain wax. This is a foul smelling substance, but it will keep the the blade from rusting.

I might have to do some... Reasearch.

Choji oil ( mineral oil with clove oil added for scent ) is used in Japan. Before I learned this, I bought a one ounce bottle of clove oil at the pharmacy ( to relieve toothaches ), took a look around to see what to mix it with, and saw a bottle of Kama Sutra oil. Add a very small amount of clove oil to 6 ounces of Kama Sutra Aromatic Pleasure Garden oil and shake. You'll probably find between 1/8 and 1/2 ounce about right.

If you don't believe me, ask Yvsa. I sent him a knife oiled with it.

It's mineral oil for me. No problems with it so far, and I've been using it for a year now.

Mineral oil. Cheap as dirt, and I never can convince myself that any of the high-tech stuff is worth the $, and it's quick to wipe on& off. It does cloud a little, at least the way I use it, so my knives are seldom shiny out the sheath, but they never rust.

Err, Rusty . . . KAMA SUTRA PLEASURE GARDEN OIL?!!

I fear to step into your workshop

Nice aroma though. And don't forget to rub it into the black leather scabbard too.

I just use a little WD40. I have had pretty good results with it this far. Kamagong, was that you I saw over on the Les Baer forum?

By the way which one's Pink?

Mostly, I don't. It's a quick scrub with a scotch-brite pad and a wipe with a towel for my working blades.

For long-term storage or display blades I use Rust-Free. It's a silicon based oil I got from A. G. Russell. I have used mineral oil in the past with no problems also.

Renaissance Wax works well too. Not an oil though.

For blades either Ballistol or a "dry" Teflon Spray. For leather, wood and horn Ballistol (since it brings out the grain on wood and horn better than other oils, and "softens" horn a bit, too).

ehem, Rusty, "Kama Sutra Oil" sounds somewhat like it possibly could be used for other purposes, too

Does WD-40 really work? I used it for a little while to oil my skates, and it turned to bubble gum in the bearings. It left a bad taste and I haven't used it for much since.

:
I'm with Anton and have been using Ballistol, especially on the ones that don't get out often.
The Ballistol is a really great product as far as I'm concerned!!!!
I really like it and I don't mind its smell. There is a thread on the general forum about the Ballistol and how well it cleans the green gunk off knife blades, in this case a machete right now, or was yesterday.

http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum41/HTML/000082.html

The olive oil I first used with great success, and recommended highly, finally turned gummy and made the khuk's hard to remove from the scabbard.

The Ballistol finally cleaned the scabbards to the way they should be.

I also have been using some mineral oil as well with no complaints.
I have also gotten some Food Grade Silicon in a spray can that also works well, but it's not handy since a special trip into town has to be made to purchase it. And when all is said and done I strongly suspect that most silicon sprays would actually be Food Grade as well.
Why make more than one product when you can just label the one you make all the time as Food Grade?

And the little village khukuri that my little Bro sent me is waiting until I get around to putting either the deer bone or deer stag handle, hopefully copper fittings, on it.
I keep it in its scabbard and it _Still_, After all this Time, has a strong smell of the sexy oil he dowsed it with.
smile.gif

And One of these days I may get around to going to one of our local head shops to pick up some of that oil.
BUT Having it on my khuk's that I keep in the safe the odor may start penetrating into the different parts of my guns and I Might just get some Dayumed Funny Looks when I do get to go shooting or hunting.

And yet it may benefit any intruder into our home with at least one nice memory when he gets to the Hell I will blow him too if s/he is stupid enough to come into our home with us at home.
