What kind of sheath should I make?

I am finished customizing my Dalton Companion and now I'd like to make a sheath for it since it has no clip. I have all the leather and tools but I don't know which style to make. I originally bought this knife because it looked like a "professional" knife that would be fit to accompany me in formal occasions. I mirror polished the blade and button and replaced the scales with black walnut. I am thinking of a slide sheath like those for semi autos or an open top like a magazine rig. My main concern with these two styles is retention, I don't want it to come out unless I make it. If you can add anything I haven't thought of, don't hesitate.

Here is a pic for those of you who haven't seen a Companion (Courtesy of TAD)

I would make one that your lovely blade would never fall out unless you need to get it.

I think that a nice horizontal leather sheath in a rich mahogany color would be nice to accent that fine knife. You could have a standard leather flap come over the top of it. The flap could be made so that it was open in the middle of it, and the edges of it went over the guard area of the knife. That way, some of that fine knife would be seen, yet firmly held by the flap going over the guards. If that made and sense? Let us all see what you finally do. It is one sweet looking knife, that is for sure!:D

Arch: I like your idea about the split flap. I think I'm going to do that except vertical.

If you can picture this sheath without a bottom, that has about an inch of knife sticking out. The gaurds would keep it from falling through and the split flap would keep it from falling out

The open bottom would sure look nice, but it would expose that nice handle to scratches. Seat belt locks like to scratch stuff. Also brushing against a wall something else would take its toll on the wood inlay. I say cover it up and keep it purty.

Matt,
I like that idea! I think a knife that beautiful should be seen when worn. Open at the bottom with a split top flap will show it off quite well. I hope you post pics when you are done. It sounds like a great plan.

I'll probably start working on it tonight. If I can get ahold of a digicam or a polaroid, I'll get a pic up.
