I just won this knife blank on ebay.I'm looking for ideas on what type of handle material to use on it.I want it to be a dressy knife.I'm thinking like a light tan burl with dark & light swirls in it.
Spacers or no?What type/kind of pins would you use?

Specs:

Damascus steel blade forged by Alabama Damascus. The blade is 3 1/4" and overall 8 1/8" 0.130" thick.
Composition is (4) layers of 5160 oil hardening high carbon, (3) layers 203E low carbon nickel steel, (3) layers of 52100, and (3) layers of 15N20. The steel is forged out and folded 5 times to give you 416 layers.
Hollow Ground.Heat-treated to 58-60 Rc.

I'm just looking for ideas. This is my first "put together" knife.

:)Thanks for any suggestions,

Nice blade !

It looks pretty dark from your pic , I'm picturing white bone scales with red spacers. Aluminum guard nicely polished.

Or .... that elephant ivory micarta with red spacers.

Some nice multicolored mosaics for pins would be so pretty.

:)

Tostig

how about some birdseye maple or like tostig said, ivory and red spacers?

:thumbup:Thanks for the suggestions Rich & Tostig!

I didn't even think about the ivory or white bone. That would certainly look nice!

I'd like to use natural materials on this, rather than synthetics.

Thanks again...keepem' coming guys :thumbup::cool:

:thumbup:That's some nice Thuya burl Phillip!...almost looks like leopard spots

How do you think Mother of Pearl would look on this??Is it terribly expensive?

Would look nice but I think it would go from a possible user knife to a shelf piece with MOP.

Unless your talking synthetic MOP.

What do you guys think ?

What about Oosik ? :D

Mother of pearl would be incredibly expensive in that size. (If available). I was looking at over $100 for RAM scales. Prices seem to increase exponentially as size goes up.

If you'd like some thuya, I could cut you some for a reasonable price.

Thanks Phillip.Mother of Pearl isn't one of the options then.

I like the idea of the Ivory or white bone with red spacers though.

Some mosaic pins with red/blue/black/white coloring would be quite handsome to boot ! :D

Oh, one thing about mosaics. Try to make sure that they are all rotated so that the pattern aligns with the spine. I personally suck at doing this, but it's worth trying.

Wow,Great tip. I never (ever) would have thought of that.Thank you!

I agree something light colored would go great with that blade.....

I figured I'd follow up on this thread.

I opted for the white bone/red liners/brass pins(:thumbup:Thanks for the suggestion Tostig)

Phillip Dobson did the work.I'm very happy with the way this one turned out.

It's Phil's pic too.My pics.....well my pics suck:o

[edited to add]
Phillip also did the scales on the Chinook III in my sig pic. That's Thuya Burl wood.
If you want scales replaced on your production knife,I highly recommend Phillip Dobson.
