What kind of Spydie am I?

My sister is a baker in Denver, CO, and she likes Spyderco's. She has been to the Spyderco company store a couple times (when it was Ironstone). The owner of the bakery (Denver Bread Company) is a Spyderco fan and I think he is the one who got her interested. So last year he went up to Ironstone for the once a year closeout sale. He bought knives for all the employees as Christmas presents. I'm planning to get my sister a new Spydie this year myself so I was trying to figure out (over the phone) what knives she already has.

She has two Delicas, one blue with integral clip and a newer one. And then she has the mystery knife (and it is the one the owner gave her for Christmas). She told me it was a little smaller than the Delicas but "the lock was different." After I described locks to her we concluded it is a liner lock. But Spydie makes very few small linerlocks. I had her measure everything. She measured the blade at 2 3/4 inches. The OAL length at 6 1/8 and the weight at 3 oz. The blade says AUS-8 and Japan. The blade has a "bevel on the top toward the tip." I think she's talking about a top swedge there. And then she really messed me up by telling me it had metal "handles." So it has metal scales that are "matte black." And it was purchased a year ago at Ironstone.

Here's my guess (with no facts to back it up!). The measurements are almost dead on for a C37 Walker Lightweight (except for weight caused by the metal scales). Is it possible that Spyderco made a special run of C37 with anodized aluminum scales for Ironstone? What was suggested retail back then? Or is it something else entirely?

what she probably has is an Almite Walker. i have an older ironstone catalog. it has aluminum scales and was an ironstone exclusive. sugg retail is listed at 79.95. it sold for 63.95. the only thing is that almite is more blue/grey, but her perception might be black.

as a suggestion, you might consider a calypso jr.

Good call, leroys_45. Sounds like an Almite Walker. The Almite coating seems to come in various colors - I purchased an Almite Walker for a friend recently and it was indeed matte black, but other Almite Spydies have been blue-gray, and the older TufRam coats came in at least tan and gray.

Thanks guys! It is her favorite knife although she is interested in getting something bigger. She sharpens her own knives at the bakery and prefers plain edges. I've been telling her she needs something with VG-10 or CPM 440v so this is my chance.

I'm actually planning to get her one of the new Lightweight Calypso Jr.'s. Can't beat VG-10! My other sister is more of a problem. She is a total "non-knife" person. I'm planning to get her a G-10 Navigator with plain blade. She's been watching her sister carry Spydies for years so maybe we can talk her into it.
