What kind of "stag" is this?

I dug this one out an hour or so ago and I'm trying to decide what kind of antler this is. I have Buck's with Elk, European Stag and Sambar so I'm trying to decide what was used on this one. The COA is no help, it just says stag.

Whatever it is, it's nice and matched pretty well side to side.

Any ideas?

I'd say elk, sambar stag is much different than el stag, elk is mor pourous, which gives it that grey shade look.

The 532 was made with both sambar stag and elk handles. I'm gonna go the other way and say that it is sambar, so we are now tied at one to one. If you have the box with catalog number, I can tell you for sure.

Edit: I just noticed your COA states it is Model 532BP7; it was made for sale by Bass Pro and is definitely sambar stag and is Catalog #9583. 532BP3 is elk.

+1....I agree.

Dave,

That one sold at BP for $100 and I saw them in the store. At the time I was not a fan of the 532, but that Sambar 532 was fantastic looking. I came away from BP with the 694 elk stag battling Bucks knife at the time. I have always looked to find another BP 532 with Sambar that nice. Dave's is just about as nice as the one I saw.

Someone needs to invent a machine that can match Buck stag scales better. Time allowed, or limited purchasing or some other human factor does not seem to influence nice matched front and back photos of our stag scales on this forum.... No wait they must be using the 'make the front a nice one and hide the worst one on the back' machine.......300

Thanks Tin and jb. I was leaning in that direction, it just has a bit more color to it than most of the elk that I have.

300, I know they could be matched a bit better but I'm happy that the sides are at least shaped the same and have the same darker color bark. I've seen many that don't.

About the only way I can see that a perfect match side to side on each and every knife would involve cast or molded faux stag. :barf:

Either that or the person that assembles the knive could spend hours on each knife searching for a perfect match. I don't want either to happen. I don't want manufactured stag and I don't want to pay the cost of hours extra work. I'll accept some variation instead. ;)

Beautiful knife Dave.
While not perfect match they are both nice looking. For the 532 I'd a liked to seen it more slim. But selecting stag like that is not easy, trying to make sure it doesn't wane out to soon, and fit everywhere.

VERY nice 532 Dave. Those scales are matched as good as would be hoped for, and better than many.

I would be happy to have that knife.

OK,I'm gonna change my original answer, now i think the left side of the knife(blade stamp)is elk stag, and the right side of the knife has sambar stag, its just an opinion, but the left side look swat too grey and pourous to be sambar stag.

I just realized that I have both versions, the elk and the sambar. I ran across the old thread about them and then found the photos. Now, I just have to find the elk version so I can get some better pictures of them both.

The sambar shown above is the bottom knife in these old pictures.

OK, Dave this is a intervention.....

I think everyone will support me, you really have to get a record of your knives going. You can't keep always looking. The time you spend getting it going will eventually be eliminated by the quick ability to respond to the forums needs.

Do I have a Amen from everyone....300

I recommend the card system for you...

If you feel the religion, do this photo record type, then you will have a good photo of every knife you can quickly find.
Just do it.

What a great idea. I never thought of photo-logging them. Thanks.
