I just broke my file guide. Now here is my thoughts on the subject. It was too hard!

You have to be able to tighten enough to keep it from moving but if you oveRtighten it will snap!

So here is my thoughts. I don't think mild steel is not the answer, becuase over time it will completely distort!

I am thinking spring steel. Or should I say steel tempered like spring steel. Tempered enough to be springy but not tempered enough to snap.
Then cover the leading edge with carbide strips, epoxied too it.
I know you can buy them as I checked into this one time before, and I think I still have a book mark on that (will have to check)! I know they are not exactly cheap but when you use the file guide w/a grinder the carbide woudl be a great help!

That is what happened to me today. I had tightened the file guide and had made several passes on both sides of the blade. I had also cooled the blade twice. So my theroy is that it wasn't necessarialy too tight,as much as it was the heat/cool cycle that applied the extra force needed to break the guide!

So throw me a bone here. What steel am I talking about and how do I go about heat treating it for a file guide like I am talking about! Anyone want to take a shot at this, ANYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)

I made mine out of O1 I tempered it at 300° twice and have not had any problems with it yet.

I used some 1084 because thats what i had at the time. tempered it at 275.
