bar stock from Home Depot. (its 1.5'' x .25'' x 4')
what kind of steel would these stores sell? (its says its hot rolled if that makes any difference)

thanks

You wouldn't want to try to make a blade of that steel. I bought a bar of the hardware store steel, and it doesn't work all that great. If you need cheap steel, go with 1095. I just bought a bunch of cold rolled annealed 1095 steel from Admiral Steel (www.admiralsteel.com) and its pretty cool. Got a good clean finish with very little scale as well.

A-36 is what all of those type of outfits carry. A-36 is basically the leftovers from a bunch of pours. It is all put into one crubile and then re-melted/poured. You are as likely to find Ti in it as you are iron, nickel, steel.
