What kind of steel?

What kind of steel is used in lawnmower blades? I have a couple from a John Deere riding mower and was wondering if they could be made into decent knives.

No clue on what type of steel they are, but they would have been heat treated already..... So reshaping them would not be easy or worth the effort.

IIRC lawnmower blades are made from something on the order of 1050.

The emphasis is on CHEAP,tough blades that will not chip when they hit a rock.

A lot of lawnmower blades are made from 5150 or 5160. You could try contacting John Deere and asking them what kind of steel they use.
