I found these tracks on the dirt road close to the house. I'm thinking they are coyote or either dog? they seem mighty big app 4 inches by 3inches it has been raining off and on and the tracks look at least a few days old.

it started raining before i could measure the distance between the tracks but it was almost three steps for me. so i'm thinking it was moving pretty fast when it made the tracks.

At first I thought it was a coyote track, but with the length of stride I'd guess a large dog. Coyote tracks seem to line up straight when their running where as a dogs will be side by side like in your first picture. That's my final guess :)

at first i thought it was just one of the neighbors dogs but the track is so large, any idea on what size dog (or coyote) it would be? the tracks are also just on the edge of the dirt road kind like it cut out of the woods (103 acre swamp) i lost them and could not tell if it went back in the woods or crossed the road

Large domestic dog. Coyote tracks a smaller and more oval. Domestic dog tracks like the ones shown are more rounded in appearance. A shot of the trackline would be helpful. Usually you can tell much more from the way the tracks are placed in relation to each other than from a single closeup of one or two tracks.

the tracks were in a fairly straight line. i didn't think to take pics of it though and the rain has almost washed them away

Definatly not coyote. I would guess from what I can see it is not wolf either. Most likely a dog.

Dog it is. Coyote prints would generally be a bit smaller and more in a straight trotting line. This is some big dog amblin' along.

Yup.... domestic dog.
Too small for wolf(wolf tracks are as large as most folk's closed fist, palm down.).
Too wide for coyote(They are usually more egg shaped with the middle toes further ahead of the outer pads.).

Here is a great drawing showing the subtle differences between coyote and dog.

those are most def dog tracks, the size of the track and the visable toe-nail are the give away unless you live in an area where wolves are common those are dog tracks

Are you suggesting that wolf tracks have no nail marks?

I'm confused. Are you saying coyote toe nails are not visible?

no, wolf tracks do have nail marks sorry about the confusion. dog tracks and wolf tracks look almost identical. and coyote tracks also have nail marks but are considerbly smaller then most dog tracks

I agree...100% Domestic Dog ! Like everyone else has said, Coyote tracks are usually smaller & more oval shaped & when you follow the tracks they will be in a row...not side by side. Here are a few pics of some Coyote tracks I took here at my house a few weeks ago -

See how the pattern is single file....Dogs tend to be more scattered & clumsy looking -
