What kind of turnover rate does your collection have?

I've never had more than 30 knives at once, and I probably replace about 1/3 of that each year. There's a few I don't plan to ever get rid of, but I just like owning more than I'll ever use, while still keeping the number on hand sorta small.

Heh, I doubt 30 knives is a small collection to anyone outside of forums like this :D

I'd been accumulating steadily for 4 years or so, although I only managed to have 75 or so total. Three months ago I started trading away the non-users and have turned over about 1/5 of my knives and have about 70 total (just counted them; dang, that's still a lot!). I still have 10 or 15 that I wouldn't mind trading for something else. Unbelievably, I haven't bought a new one in 4 months or so.

My turnover rate is nearly zero. I give a few knives away as gifts, but so far I have never sold one. I was looking at a funky Japanese hunting knife I have in a kitchen drawer. The guard is broken short, the handle has been shortened and taped, the back of the blade has hand-filed teeth so I could use it as a divers knife. That is the first sheath knife I bought in about 1960. I am just as attached to most of my collectable knives.

Same here. I'm keeping EVERY custom I've ever purchased.

I keep even the production models that have "lost their charm", so to speak. ;)

But, I must admit, I have been thinking recently of selling one or two of them. Maybe. Perhaps.

I never intended to wind up with a bunch of knives.

I just bought what I could afford, and slowly learned what I really like and didn't like.

Always thought "that one might be a little better"...

I've really got about 4 that I actually use:

Buck / Mayo TNT - Workday EDC
Dozier K1 "general utility" -- weekend EDC
Entrek Companion - camping
Swamp Rat Bandicoot - working in the yard

I don't know what I'm going to do with the rest. They just sit in my display case and look pretty.

Zero turnover. Never sold or traded a knife. I learned early to buy only what I really want for the collection or for a user. I am even more selective now.

As hardheart and Julian know :D, I do alot of trading here at the Forums, but still, there are a few knives that'll not-likely get traded-away anytime soon; Most of my Benchmades, my Camillus CUDA CQB-1, Cold Steel Vaquero Grande, etc...:).

Other than the neverending passaround, I've never traded or sold any of my knives as several were gifts, every time someone asks what to get me for a gift I tell them a knife.

first few yrs i collected i was always selling/swapping something, but the last yr or so i seem to have gotten what i need/like, so now it has to be something COOOL and hard to find, or i will just buy it, vs swapping for it.

occasionally when i look in the swap section i see something i like and consider swapping one of my current collection, i havent yet this yr. just like all my stuff too much, and lots of what i have is not only cool, but also can be hard to getalso (ie emerson spec war CQC8 zero bevel ,my current edc, or my darrel ralph maxx 4" spear point talonite blade/carbon fibre handles, or my MT SOCOM elite w/a brend grind blade, all pretty neat and kinda hard to find too.)

so no, havent been swapping much lately.

edited to add the # in my collection is right around 40 right now, mostly folders, i have 4 i carry rotate for edc (crawford perfigo-emerson spec war CQC8-BM axis AFCK 806SD2-emerson collectors assoc persian tactical)

I've only traded or sold probably 4 knives from my collection. I usually take the time to research a purchase so I will have an idea of what to expect. There were a few knives that I liked when I first purchased them, but never really used. If I don't use a knife or am not carrying it regularly, I usually don't keep it.

I basically have Five categories in my collection:
1) 3-4 regular users, which change periodically, when it does the used knife is sold.
2) Permanent collection- Knives that have a special, and or sentimental value and will never be parted with. Includes Custom and Factory knives
3) Semi-Permanent factory collection-knives I keep until a better example comes along, mostly older knives...Pre -1970 Case, Keen Kutter etc.
4) Semi-Permanent Custom Knives that I keep until my tastes change.
5) Knives I bought soley as an investment and will sell as soon as I can make a resonable margin.

Although this may make it sound like I have hundreds of knives, I seldom have over 50 total, and usually closer to 30-35.

The answer is probably a turnover of 1000% in other words, I usually sell or trade ten times my collection in a year.
