What Kind of Washers?

They are just nylon washers? maybe coated with Teflon?

I got a mini Comm that squeeks and lube isn't helping. :grumpy:

What kind of lubrication are you using? I use Militec-1 Grease on both sides of the washer and pivot and I've never had any issues with squeaking.

Nope, they are Nylatron washers, which is Nylon impregnated with molybdenum disulfide, a rather good lubricant. You might try stripping the knife and cleaning it that way, or if you are not that adventurous, a thorough washing in hot soapy water followed by a hot water rinse should work. Dry well with a hair dryer and lube sparingly with a lube of your choice. I recommend Benchmade's 'Blue Lube'.

I just got a Cqc13 and i opened the whole thing up. There were brown thingys on the pivot and washers despite the default lubricant. Anyway, it came off easily. After re-oiling it and reassembling it, the knife now squeaks alittle. The squeak doesn't come from the pivot, but from the liner lock rubbing against the blade. Any solutions?

If it's a new Emerson knife it just needs to be broke in. It usually takes a few weeks for my new Emersons to start getting smooth where it flicks with just my thumb and doesn't make a rubbing or sqeak sound. To break it in as soon as I get a new Emerson I stripe it down and clean it really good, put a tiny drop of Blue Lube on the washers, put it back together then open and close it as much as possible for the next week. As I'm sitting watching TV I continually open and close it, as I drive to work and home I open and close it. Then about a week later I break it down and clean it again. I try not to use too much oil the first week because I want the detents to start slightly wearing a smooth notch/track on the blade, and I want the washers to start wearing a smooth area on the liners.

I wish Emerson put smooth finish on the inside of the liners so that this break-in wasn't as necessary, but I wouldn't trade mine. I have my Benchmades that open perfect like butter the first flick, and I have a box of them,.. but it's always an Emerson in my pocket when I go to the city or somewhere I want self protection. Nothing beats the feeling of my Commander in my pocket.

I know it. I stripped down my NOS 2004 CQC-11, cleaned it thoroughly (because the 6 year old grease was nasty as hell), and used mil spec rifle grease on the pivot point and washers. It's much smoother now, and since I tightened down the pivot screw more it lines up better between the liners and locks up better... who'd a thunk it.

Are these washers better than bronze phos washers? Has anyone ever tried doing a custom washer swap for the bronze phos?

do Emerson customs use the same washers as production Emersons?

Yes they do.

I really didn't think I would like the nylatron washers but have become a convert from PB washers, less speed but definitely smoother.

I did this as an experiment on a couple of Emerson knives several years ago. The PB washers were possible better in bending stiffness but the Nylatrons were smoother. Nylatron never corrodes. I went back to Nylatron and have never looked back.

The claims that PB is better and comes only on the "best knives" is marketing BS.

Both PB and Nylatron make great pivot bearings.

personally I prefer PB, but that's PB from a good maker. I think a great maker can make a great knife with any washer, and a low-quality maker could make a bad knife with any type of washer.
