The owner is calling it "burlwood" and Buck's PF Store said it is "weathered Ironwood". Also, which of the two is the better wood?

That knife is Bob Timberlake creation from 2008 the wood should be burl I think , the feather looks awesome .

Ok, I just read where burl wood isn't a specific type of wood but a condition of many different types of woods. Am I right?

Burl: The dictionary defines burl as an abnormal wart-like growth or excrescence, often produced by stooling. Stooling refers to the throwing out of shoots from a tree stump to produce a second growth from the original roots. Irritation or injury results in the stunted growth, which develops into a contorted and gnarled mass comprised of dense and woody tissue. The surprise is that this contorted and twisted specimen can be unearthed and sliced to yield a dramatic and often beautiful piece of wood with many "eyes".

There are many kinds of burl. I have knives with handles made of redwood, buckeye and amboyna burl that I can recall off hand.
I also have the same LE 303 and it looks like desert ironwood to me.

I would say iron wood also based on other knives i have seen in ironwood. i actually just bought this same knife. waiting for its arrival

You are correct. Burl doesn't refer to a species of wood, but a condition that happens to any species of tree. So yes you are correct. And it does look to be ironwood

Top knife is a burl (can't remember off hand what kind) and the bottom is desert ironwood. 300 Bucks has posted a picture of his and it has the 2006 date stamp on it, he calls it ironwood also. The COA that came with mine only says "natural material", no mention of the type.

I've not been able to find it listed in the Special Projects or LE lists.

We have generally, as a group, called it Ironwood. I do not have a specific file on this model. So, I think I will continue to call it Ironwood. The finish on my example is not polished burl, it is rough surfaced ironwood finished....as I bet the one pictured is also.

As is mine. It has a distinct rough texture and has a dull finish. It also has the exact same "born on" date as the knife in post #1.

The knife is a rejected SO knife. It was to be part of the BP Timberlake series. However, did not get accepted by BP I suspect due to the poorly finished look of the wood. Therefor, the knife is not on the LE/SP lists and was sold to a few of the Buck dealer/re-sellers for cheap prices!

Thanks for the info John.

I like the look of the darker wood, very rich in hue. Buck offered that wood on a 111 for Cabela's at Spokane for this store's grand opening. Most were snagged up but I saw one when at that store in 2008. DM
