This is the handle on a 22" Chitlangi from the DOTD 12/5.

This is after sanding and 5 coats of WATCO Danish Oil.

Any ideas??

Sure not from me AL. There has been such an influx of new woods I haven't learned them all yet.:(

I think it might be that new Saaj wood? A bit lighter than neem, with some grain to it. You did a nice job there cleaning it up and refinishing it!

It is very striking, a real standout.
Also, it is a hardwood and has a nice grain texture for a good grip.:D

I'm going to sand it some more and do the True-Oil finish on it. That should really make this handle "POP"!!!

Looks like mahogany or red oak to me...

Can you show us the other side? If its saaj then you really must have spent some time getting the rouge out of the pores. My new jange is saaj and its really caked up with the rouge. The pores are MUCH bigger than red oak's. I'm going to work the rouge out of there and re-fill those huge pores with a dark filler. Its also a little large for my hands too, so I'll sand it down some and redefine the ring. Somehow every handle I have gotten except my chiruwa AK have had poorly fashioned rings.

I don't think its red oak from the pic. Its too evenly poored. Could be mahogany, colors right and poores are consistantly spaced. Could be that saaj too, I'm so new to it I don't think I could recognize it well. Also, someone mentioned neem and I haven't even seen that one. I am very interested in the hardwoods available to the kamis. The satistal on my GRS is really beautiful wood.

The other side is pretty much identical and it didn't have much red rouge in the grain as seen from Yangdu's picture from the DOTD.

It really does look and feel like Oak. Just has an orange color.

It really does look like Oak to me as well. IIRC the Saatisal is a form of Nepali Oak but it doesn't look like Saatisal.
I'm wondering if it may be the Hill Walnut that we see now and then?
Just not familiar enough with the new woods to fathom a guess.
It's possible that it's the sapwood of one of the hardwoods instead of the usually darker heartwood.

I gather that Aunt Yangdu didn't have any more idea than we do:o
22 inch 27 ounce villager Chitlangi by Bura. Nice wood handle.
Perfect rig for $125 YBB***** *SOLD*

I wanted to say saatisaal, but Yangdu would have mentioned it, had she thought that. I have had pieces of saatisaal that color...but not as "brown" after it's finished...

I do think remember some mahogany being sent over at some point..so it's not entirely out of the question...
