I just put the first coat of oil on this kitchen knife - it's a half-arsed 1/16" learning experiment, so I decided to try some unknown wood.
I've got maybe half a cord of cut-offs from a local custom milling shop, including lots of this stuff. I'd thought it was African mahogany, but now it looks kind of like walnut once oiled. It shapes about the same as maple under a file & sandpaper. It will burn on the sander, but not as bad as maple.
The grain is dense. Drilling is smooth, and tear-out is minimal. It's pretty light, though. I split long matched scales from a piece and decided to save the neat two-tone section for a nicer knife. The handle on the knife here is from the gray/brown section of the scales in the background.
What do you think it is?
I've got tons.
