Marked "BUCK" Rubbery handle. Not on Buck website. Hollow ground 470C blade. Chintzy looking. Plastic or Kydex sheath with a little springy thingy at the top to sorta restrain the blade at the thumb part of the blade. Greyish dull finish. 6" fixed blade at a strange downward angle. Sorta takes an edge but haven't found the trick (or maybe have and this is as good as it gets)
Loaned 5 bucks on it and the guy left it. Not a good sign.
Any idees?

Sounds to me like a Buck Mentor, same steel buck uses in all their other stainless knives.

How bout posting a pic? that can help alot... is it old looking or just beat up?

Is this the knife you are talking about? If so, it's the Mentor.

Buck uses 420HC with their excellent heat treat on this knife. The sheath is made of the same thermoplastic as the handle if I remember correctly. This is not as bad a knife as you make it out to be. It sold for as little as $25.00 was a good knife for the price, in my opinion.

I agree with Keith. The Buck Mentor was a very basic, inexpensive knife, but it was not crappy as you make it sound. I know many folks who bought and still use Buck Mentors and Proteges. Buck knows there are lots of people who cannot afford to drop $75.00-$150.00 on one knife, so they answered the demand by producing basic, affordable knives that could do the job.

I think it´s a decent knife and surely worth more than $5. I have a mini-mentor and am happy with it, took a good edge after I built a double bevel. It doesn´t get any tough use, mostly in the kitchen, it´s a lot more comfortable and sharp than a lot of tipical kitchen knives, stays sharp with frequent touch-ups on a steel.

I have a Mentor and find it a good knife for a lot of basic chores. If you're unhappy, I'd gladly double what you loaned for it.
