Almost everything and anything that need to be asked about knives have been mentioned here or sometime in the past. Perhaps some of you may want to know certain things about knives and its related subjects.

If you have this nagging urge, what exactly would you like to know?
I noticed that topics and questions are mainly posed by collectors.
Some knifemakers do bring up some subjects but not many.

What would tickle your fancy regarding your knife hobby?
Speak now. :D

OK, I have one question. Is there any knifemaker who makes only fixed blades and only one type of blade, and nothing else. Why?

I'll jump in and show off my idiocy. I'd like to know why my damasteel knife has no pattern on the sharpened edge. This is my first damascus knife, and I know nothing about the stuff.

Damascus has to be etched to bring out the "grain", since your blade is etched and then sharpened it gets rid of the grain.

Un-etched damascus just looks like cheap pot metal.

Occasionally after a long time of hard use the pattern of damscus may start to fade and could need re-etched again. This would depend on how deeply it was etched in the first place.

Hey, that's a pretty good explanation, Cpirtle. Now I know better!
Thanks.

I've always wondered, but never researched to find, how makers can get the intricate and repeatable patterns in Damascus. I mean some of that Devin Thomas stuff is pure art. And you can see the same patterns repeated in many different styles, but many different makers who use his stuff. I get the idea of folding steels on themselves to develop the patterns, but how do you fold to make Spirograph each time, for instance.

You asked.

Come to think of it, I too am curious as to how the various patterns of damascus are created.

Can anybody help here?

Golok, glad I could help..

What amazes me is the Damascus that actually has images embedded into it.

Skulls and Spiders

I have another question that concerns fixed blade carry.

When you wear your fixed blade cross-draw style, on a horizontal belt sheath, and the knife has a lanyard, do you accidentally piss on the lanyard when standing at a urinal? This question has plagued me for some time now.

I thought I'd say a few words about patterns in damascus steel. I can't say how each pattern is made- that I don't know. But the patterns are made by folding the steel different ways. You start with a bar of alternating layers of steel (you weld them together in your forge- say O1-L6-O1-L6-O1 that would be a 5 layer bar. Now you could fold it in half lengthwise and then in half widthwise and alternate that a bunch of times and you'll get one pattern. Or, you could twist the bar 1 or 2 or 5 times, and then make your blade. Or you could twist and fold. It is amazing the different patterns you can get.

That's exactly what puzzles me Cray, the fact that you are folding steel in layers over and over, but how do you get skulls and snakes, or raindrops, or sharks fins to show up?

And Buzz, I guess it depends on the length of your lanyard...

:D :p :D

I asked the pattern/damascus thing at a knife show recently, and I heard something about Powdered metal. They have a form into which they put a "rod" that has some shape, e.g. spiders, snakes, etc. and then fill in the form with a powdered metal. This metal is of a different type. After that, they heat it up so that the whole thing anneals, and Voila! there's the pattern! From there they can roll out the steel, and/or fold it together, or just slice and dice it:D Well, that is how I understand it, but I could be wrong.

That was a question that had been bothering me for a while. I'm sure there are others who could better explain it than me, and I would love to hear them.

I think there are some that put the patterns in themselfs....though i dont think they can do spiders and skulls:p

Ok...Someone PLEASE tell me the REAL reason why REKAT quit making knives! I wanna know.

Personally I never have pissed on the lanyard before but.... I almost hanged my little friend once!!! :D

In addition to what's already been said about the mosiac damascas, chk out a few places for more info...

Powdered steels for forging

I'm not sure how applicable EDM is to this, as it seems it's usually done via more traditional methods, but it was mentioned at CKD.

Also, Buzzbait:
"When you wear your fixed blade ... do you accidentally piss on the lanyard when standing at a urinal?"
Accidentally? I piss on it for good reason! :D

I want to know why Marbles can't seem to establish a direction and stay with it. And why did they change from 52100?

The American Bladesmith Society has a Master Smith programme that runs for about four to five years.

What happens when you receive your Master Smith title?

What happens if you don't make it, can you try again?
