when you are carrying a tomahawk or hatchet what knife are you backing it up with.

i thought this would be interesting to see what knife you feel compliments your hawk the best.

BK9 or Ranger. I have the molle sheath attached to to my pack so it will accommodate a large fixed blade all the way up to my RTAK. I just place whatever blade suits the intended purpose.

I just bought a KA-BAR Heavy Bowie. It is not pretty but very functional and a great knife for the money. I carry it, my tomahawk, and a 4 in. folder in my pocket. The KA-BAR and the tomahawk compliment each other very well. The folder is used for the light cutting duties.

PanMan

Utility - K5 Tactical HP Hawk w/BK&T BK2 & SAR Knives Runt necker. Or,
TOP's Outfitters Axe w/Kabar SP Impact D2 Micarta & CRKT Crawford
N.E.C.K necker.

Martial Arts - Paul Chen Francesca Axe. Stag & Steel Wolf's Fang w/ SAR
Knives Hornet EDC necker.

Here's a pic of one of the combos I carry.

very nice styling on that hawk. looks like a cs trailhawk if i am not mistaken

Good thread.

I carry my ATC VTAC and my Spyderco Manix. Though the Manix is my EDC knife and i am never without it, it still rides with me in the woods or on FTX's. This knife is capable of handling hard cutting tasks as well as lighter ones. However, i want a good Swamp Rat Fixed blade but I just dont want to buy one off Ebay. I want one straight from SRKW and I hear that they are hard to get them at sometimes... I want one badly though! IMO, the ATC VTAC and a Swamp Rat fixed blade would be about an insurmountable axe/knife combo.

i don't have any of the rats but i have quite a few busses that i use like the mofo or force one.

At this point, all I want is a brand new Swamp Rat blade for carry with my VTAC.

hatchetjack - how are ya doing buddy! :) Nice combo! been throwing your VTAC any lately? ;)

recon-you should seriously think about getting a blade from Ranger. Justin Gingrich used to work with ATC years ago so your equipment would be somewhat from the same family of makers. Beside, Justin was an Army Ranger which is right up your alley and he can also customize your blade to your specs and get it to you quickly.

The new RD series looks pretty nice and these blades are made to take it.

hatchet - do you have a link to where i can look at his page and some of his blades? Former employee of ATC huh? ;) I am sure the knives are quality in that case.

Ok, well I found the link to Justin's blades. Question though.. isnt the 1095 steel used by ATC or am I mistaken??? How is the shipping process as well jack? do they come straight from Justin or are they are customly made and built?

The ranger website is outdated and need to be re-done. The RD series of blades have been re-designed and I think you will like them. Ranger uses 5160 steel but you can request a blade with other steel if you wish.

I had a customized RD9 made a couple years ago and it took less than 2 weeks from contact with Justin to my doorstep. Here is a pic with my VTAC. I had a kydex sheath made for it by David Brown. Total cost for both was less than 200 bucks.

There is a Ranger knife forum that is moderated by Justin. Do a Google and you should find it. You will also see posts of the new Ranger RD series designs.

The older ones like mine resemble the old Busse BM's as originally Ranger bought a bunch of apprentice blanks from Busse when he started out. You can find more info on that on BF and the web.

You can give Justin a call. He's great to deal with.

BTW, you just missed out on a good deal on a new style RD6. Check the pics also here:

Now i carry a cold steel Norse Hawk (on pack), Gerber recoil multi-tool(belt or pack), Benchmade Griptillian in pocket, and a Cold Steel R1 Military Classic on Belt, sometimes i carry a Ontario Spec Plus survival bowie instead of the Cold Steel.

My next set will be a Cold Steel Riflemans Hawk and a Bushman
Then for my Tacti-Cool Set a VTAC and a blade thats undecided as of yet.
