I haven't seen that movie in a few years but I do remember him having a knife, sorry.

I watched it tonight and the only time I saw anything resembling a knife was when he pulled the slug out of the newspaper, and that looked like a marlin spike not a knife.
 
Later in the movie he hands it to the woman and says use this knife to cut the rope. I also paused it in the part of the movie that you watched and you can see it is a blade but it is just very tough to tell. Let me know if anyone comes up with the answer. If not I am sure a lot of people will enjoy the movie. THANKS! Kevin
